Default Kicker Troubles

It looks like my 1999 merc 4 stroke 9.9 kicker is blowing oil out the carberator. Has anyone had this problem before or know what the problem is?

Thanks
Doug

Yep... for a quick fix try tapping the carb with a screw driver handle if that does not work take it to the shop for a new carb. I guess there are little injection valves that can gunk up and get stuck open.

I heard there was a recall on some of these, so you might get it fixed for free at a Merc dealer. I don't know the details; just know that it was a common problem.

If your Merc kicker is blowing "oil" out the carb you've got more of a problem the a tapping screw driver is going to fix. If you mean gas, then that's an easy fix. My '01, and allot of other people's 9.9 kickers had a problem with the needle and seat in the carb that caused them to get stuck open after the motor had been in the upright position for a time.

Motor starts, then sound like it's choked and won't rev up, then you smell gas, then you see the sheen on the water, then you start to panic, because gas leaks on boats are serious business!

Check with Stevens Marine, they may still do the upgrade for free.
