Fort Clatsop replica fort burned down
Just heard on the news that the replica of Lewis & Clark's Fort Clatsop near Astoria burned down over night. Most of the building is gone or destroyed. Investigators will make a determination of cause this morning.
Rotten way to celebrate a 200th birthday.

That's AWFUL!
I loved that place! The kids and I used to play there all the time. So many field trips, so many good memories!

Re: Fort Clatsop replica fort burned down
On Sunday we were watching a tv show about Sacajawea and I said to my wife that I would have to take her over to Astoria to see Fort Clatsop since she's never been. Now it's too late. What a bummer, that was such a cool, educational place.

Re: Fort Clatsop replica fort burned down
I hope they find out what caused it..and I hope it was just an
accident of some sort.
Dont worry tho...I'm sure they will re-build it.

Re: Fort Clatsop replica fort burned down
One sad thing about this is that the bicentennial celebration of the fort was scheduled for November. Perhaps the pioneer spirit will get the fort restored. Perhaps there will be archeological oppoprtunities at the site. I think there is research showing the fort to be somewhat different than what had been built as a replica. The end result may be something more historically accurate, but the Spirit of Discovery has definitely hit a bump in the road.

Re: Fort Clatsop replica fort burned down
I was just at a talk last night about L&C in preparation for the festival in November. Considering how much it has been raining up here since I arrived I have my concerns about how that fire might have started.

Re: Fort Clatsop replica fort burned down
It only took those guys a few weeks to build the first one, I hope that with todays equipment we can do it as fast again!

Re: Fort Clatsop replica fort burned down
This really bothers me :depressed: Fort Clatsop and the museum is one of my favorite places to visit in Oregon. We took our kids there several times when they were little and they liked it too!
We used to make a joke about visiting the replica salt cairn display in Seaside because I always liked to drive by it. The whole Corps of Discovery story is very fascinating to me and hopefully they can rebuild quickly.
I understand this is being investigated as an arson case

Re: Fort Clatsop replica fort burned down
Very sad, :depressed: I was just there last weekend with my 12 year old son, we had a great time. His favorite was the black powder demonstration and talk. I heard on the news tonight that the investigators think it was arson, hope they catch whoever did it!

Re: Fort Clatsop replica fort burned down
I heard on tv that Congressman Wu and Senator Smith trying to get government funds to try and rebuild before the festival in November which is only 40 days from now.
I believe this could and should be done by then and with or without federal money.
It is a shame that this had to happen at all but a real sad thing to have happened now.

Re: Fort Clatsop replica fort burned down
They will have to rename it the Fort Clatsop Replica of the Replica.
Too bad.. I read the Book Sacajawea and when I finished it I made a trip to the fort. I don't think the Core of Discovery considered it one of the highlights of their trip.
I read somewhere: The term " Chinook Winds" refered to the smell of the indian Villiges from two miles away was so bad when the East wind blowed they called them the Chinook winds.

From MountainNature.com
"The winds are caused by moist weather patterns, originating off the Pacific coast, cooling as they climb the western slopes, and then rapidly warming as they drop down the eastern side of the mountains. The Chinook usually begins with a sudden change in wind direction towards the west or southwest, and a rapid increase in wind speed"

This can and does happen in eastern Washington and Oregon and even in Montana my dad would talk of a Chinook wind. A very warm wind even with snow on the ground. Snow melt was fast during one of the Chinooks.
As I remember from my life in the snow country.
