Hootchie Mama!!
Being a reed guy for a long time, I can say I am impressed with the hootchie mama. Over the weekend, my partner(stingray) and I brought in multiple bulls....but no shots.
I am curious to know the "proper" way to use this call. One bleat, two bleats....several fast bleats....not sure whats the Ideal way to use it....If anyone could educate my partner and I on this, we would appreciate the advice.

Re: Hootchie Mama!!
So I decided to purchase one- even though I have a cow tag for muzzle loader in the marble unit. But I may spend a bit of time in another unit looking to bugle in or use this new hoochie to find a bull. I'm waiting to hear anyone's advice on how to use it, or if I would have any success calling a cow in on it? Or should I just stick to my sceery cow call and trumpeter cow call?

Re: Hootchie Mama!!
Never heard the trumpeter cow call but I've been around lots of sceery's. The hoochie is a great complimentary call to have on you. Buy it, tie it on a lanyard of some sort, and hang it on your pack so its always around. If you're blowing your favorite cow call in one hand, or using a reed, you can be making nice sounding mews on the hoochie - making you sound like multiple cows. Not a bad thing, thats for sure. It doesnt have the versatility of a reed or other calls but its nice to have hanging there when you need it

Re: Hootchie Mama!!
The Hootchie Mama worked great for bow season. My brother and I called in multiple animals, stopped animals. The only disadvantage over a reed is that when you are in the drawn position you can't make a call to pause an animal. I suppose the same would be true for rifle.

Re: Hootchie Mama!!
I packed a Hoochie Mama last year during bow season and liked it quite a bit. I packed it this year along with 3 other cow calls. I have 3 on my necklace and the Hoochie on a short string on my fanny pack. Last year the hoochie was my "go to" call, this year it was my 4th of 4 calls.
For some reason it sounds like a warning call to me, the more I use it. I squeeze it and the elk usually run no matter what setting I have it on.
My first choice is a WoodWise hyper hot cow call, followed by the new Carlton call (I think it is the esterous whine or something like that) It is an external reel like the hyper hot. A deeper sound than the hyper hot, I had better luck this year getting bulls to answer the external reed cow calls.
For some reason I dont like the Sceery cow call, I have broke 2 of them, but my buddy usually blows it first and likes it.
I guess you could say I have 5 cow calls if you count the diaphram call I bugle with, it blows a nice cow call with some practice also.

Re: Hootchie Mama!!
I am like the rest. The hoochie just gives you one more call in the arsenal.
BOE Have you ever compared Hoochie mammas with others........(did I just say that??) Seems that some have different sounds than others....but it worked last year. My cousin had the same problem with spooking the herd with his. I compared it to mine and it is a way different sound....I told him to send it back to the Primos people and they would make it right.
I broke out a real old carlton single and it definetley was #1 for me. No meat this year but a lifetime of memories and close calls. Had mr Dragon elk come calling late on sunday. The loudest meanest thing I have ever heard... and thats what its all about.....

Re: Hootchie Mama!!
I too used the hootchie for an added call to emulate a group of cows. I did have some misfires which I might as well have yelled out . Otherwise, after getting the speed of the depression down, it sounded good and had good results. But, i'm still wondering how to maximize itys potential. So, maybe Ill reword my question.......What does a cow in heat ,.....really in heat...sound like?

Re: Hootchie Mama!!
I'll post a seperate topic for this if I don't get any answer here, but what sort of call would you use to specifically target calling in cows, not sure that I want a bull walking up when I have an anterless only tag in this unit, though it wouldn't be the end of the world. My dad and uncle both bought the sceerys and they didn't like them at all, but I've practiced a lot and I like what I'm hearing now. Between dad on the bugle, and me on the sceery, we had a whole herd (including a bull) moving towards us while out scouting the other day.

Watch the newer primos videos and you'll see it in action.

Re: Hootchie Mama!!
You'll also notice in the Primos videos, their primary calls are Hyper lip (external reed) and reed calls (diaphrams) the Hootchies are thrown in. Like BOE says, to me they sound sharp, high pitched and a little fast, like a warning chirp.
Probably OK if you want a herd effect. But I would work on a call you can control the cadence and pitch of (reed or diaphram) for a primary. I'm having a hard time getting used to walking around without my Ivory Plate in my mouth.
My buddies and I have the constant discussion about reed/diaphram and I really don't think there is a silver bullet. If you are where the bull expects a cow to be (not by the door of your pickup) and are in close range, especially in the direction he wants to go, all the calls work. Elk all sound different.
