Default Saturday afternoon Upland shoot

Spent the afternoon with my wife, daughter, and dog walking a few gated logging roads packing around my scatter gun. Lots of birds in the Trask unit behind those gates. We ended up with a limit of ruffed grouse and a limit of mountain quail. We also watched a couple hundred dove exchanging back and forth over a three year young clear cut. Too bad I didn't bring a couple of lawn chairs, cooler, and a couple boxes of shot.

I didn't see anything in the big game department but tomorrow another day. See ya in the woods...

Sounds like you're a fine shot, Tacklebuster. I've been working real hard to get some open shots on Ruffs this season. None in the bag yet but a lot of flushes on the upper Nehalem just off 26. Can you direct me to a gate or two in the Trask unit? Sure would like to tell my buddies at Grouse Camp in Michigan in two weeks that I've been skunked out here in Oregon. Thanks for the upbeat report.

Born and raised in Alabama, I did a lot of scatter gun shooting for just about everything that moved growing up. I am pretty good with the shotgun, no excuse not to with all the shooting I have done. Do you know where Boundry road or Bear or Elk Creek roads are located. I like starting in that area between Alder Creek and Elk Creek bridges. A lot of the grouse are still hanging together and you will find them in bottoms and along creek beds. I like walking gated off log roads during the morning and into the afternoon/evening hours. They love to dust themselves in the afternoon making them easier to find. Alot of the times when you flush them, they will fly to a near branch or stump. I try to hammer them right after they take flight. Another really productive area is Bible Creek Road. You can access some pretty good hunting along the side roads of that area.

Good luck.....

Tacklebuster - thanks for the tips - I'll find those roads on the topos. Rifle deer opens this weekend so I'll try to sneak into the Trask area next week. If we get rain this weekend I wonder if they will spread out from the stream bottoms?

The Alder bridge and Elk creek bridge are on the Nestuca River Access Road. It is just up from the old outpost store. Any of the side roads will put you in the right area.
