Just a quick Rooster Rock sturgeon report 10-02-05
Fished Sunday (catch and release).
Across the river from the nudie section of the park in 40' water.
I brought some smelt that has been in my deep freeze for over four years and a small bottle of sturgeon candy (squid).
Before I put the smelt in the freezer, it had sat in the toolbox of my truck (50 pounds worth) for two days...both my wife and I thought the other had moved it...so, needless to say, it was ripe. Too ripe, really...could have gagged a mule with it...so, we threw that over board and went with plan B...
I had never fished with squid before and I was worried that there wouldn't be enough to last the day...there were only 5 or 6 of the little pink guys in the jar.
It worked great! Took about 15 minutes to get into the first and then it was steady for the next 5 or 6 hours. We probably released 15 or 16 fish (not spectacular, but better than I thought it would be) two or three of which would have been keepers. The squid lasted for as long as we wanted it to as we threaded it on like smelt.
Rained like a mother, but it was pretty. We had a guest on board from Houston who had never seen a sturgeon before, so that was cool, too.
Have fun,
