Default Steel Shot $$$$

I just paid $15.99 for a box of steel shot. Last year I swear I paid under $5. Has the price gone up or am I imagining things?

2LEYS...you got ripped, unless you bought 3.5" shells. Bimart and Sportsman's generally have the best shell prices.

Sportsman's has the largest and best selection of shells I have seen anywhere, ever. They have pallets of shells and many are priced under $10 a box. Winchester is having an ongoing rebate program on any of their shells. Sportsman's has the coupons laying right on the shell pallets.

Occasionally Joe's has some pretty good sales, but often they are out of stock in the high velocity 3" #2's I like to shoot.

Next time shop around. Walmart can also have some pretty good deals as well.

It depends on what you bought. I stick with 2 3/4 #3's for just about everything, I really like the Kent Faststeel, runs about $8 a box.

If you spent under $5 a box last year, you got the best deal on steel shot I've ever heard!! The best I've been able to do was about $7-8 a box. James said it, and I'm a believer too, the best shells I've ever shot were Kent Fasteel. Can't beat that stuff, 1550 fps and only about 8 or 9 bucks if you buy a case or find a sale.

Yeah, I never pay more than $8/box, but I buy enough early in the year when it's on sale to last me the season.
Gotta look in to the Fasteel thing. I hadn't heard much about it until now.

I'm not sure it's still going on but Bi-mart had a sale on cases of Federal 3" 1500 fps shells that came out to $4.97 a box after rebate.

I'm not sure there are any left though

I know I probably got screwed. It is what you have to deal with if you wait till 10:00pm to buy shells for your pheasant hunt.

The posted price was $15.99 but they rang up as $12.99.

i stocked up on 3.5" Remington Nitro Express #2's with 1 9/16 ounce loads for about 13.99 a box. got 'em at Joes in beaverton. though i think they were missmarked becasue when i returned later in the season i think they had them priced up around 17.99 a box. i passed on that action and stepped down to 3" loads. no need for the 3.5's for ducks anyway.

I'm tellin' ya guys, if you want a good shell, you need to buy Kent Fasteel. Last season I switched over to this shell from Federal's and Remington's and it was like night and day. I could hit birds at longer distances and there was much fewer cripples. When it comes to steel, velocity is the key since it's so light, and there's nothing faster than Kent that I've found. If anyone knows of a faster shell than Kent, let us know!

Mossberg,
Thats odd that Joes let you return ammo. The Joes closest to me has big signs all over, letting you know all ammo sales are final.

Kent isn't the only steel thats that fast. Winchester makes some Xpert loads at 1550fps,and also makes some Drylok load at 1550fps.

I would only add that Winchester X super high speed loads kick much worse than Fasteel Kent loads. I don't know why, but try each and let me know if you notice the same thing. Weird both listed at 1550fps, same shot size/powder. Can anyone please splain?

You should be able to find the new Federal Speed Shok or Ultra Shok with 1550 fps with $30 a case rebates at Joes, Fishermans, Sportsmans, Bobs etc. $40 buck on the 2nd case if its the old silver HHV box ammo from 2002-3. Federal has rebranded all ammo for 2003. Great rebates on Tugsten as well.

Ouch! Thats pretty steep for steel unless like the other guy said, its 3.5". I bought a couple cases at GI Joes last year and it was $4.97 a box. It is Federal 2.75" in #2 or #4. I bought a couple boxes before hand, and it patterned real well in my Mossberg,so I stocked up.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">sorry, i phrased that poorly. i didn't return the ammo. i ment to say that when i returned to the store later in the season they had the price increased and therefor i passed on purchasing any new 3.5's and re-stocked up with 3's.
