Maggot is right . The area around the Salmon river (Riggens)is full of big bucks . Both Mule and White tail. The lower canyon country is not heavy timber but broken and scrubby. There is good opportunity to glass the canyon . If you are going to be in the Northern part of Idaho you will do better if you stick to farm field edges , there is no open ground in the North, unless its a field or clear cut. id. painter

Well.....It sounds like you're a logger by your "handle", so bring your Stihl and cut a bunch of shootin' lanes Seriously, like the guys said above, you either need alot of weather or some good private ground because there's some real dog hair up there. I like the Orofino area alot better.

Hunting the whitetail in north Idaho can be very frustrating.
I was raised hunting Mule deer in South Idaho.
At age 18 I moved to Moscow to go to school.
I had better luck killing elk. In fact I think the absolute toughest animal to kill in the thick timber is a Buck White tail.
I did end up getting a couple pretty good ones but I worked long and hard for them. You cant sneek slow or quiet enough and they are almost completely nocturnal. If you are going to be there in November try rattling horns. Good luck. id. painter.

If you are coming from up south.....try skookum creek just north of riggins. Lots of whitetails in that area. If you spook one......leave, come back 20 minutes later,If he was on his way somewhere he,ll use the same route. I have killed a few nice ones there.

Like was said before, go in november. I'm going the 10-20 to Orofino. I used to live there and there are lots of good bucks there but you never see them till they get horny.(no pun) Rattling works well so does hunting the doe's then sitting tight and waiting for the bucks. My best success has been on evening hunts where I spot does before they spot me then get comfortable and wait.

I have been on the Idaho web site and you might find some info there. As for my hunt also near Kamiah I hope to see a live deer. The White tail deer Population has BlueTongue Disease.
from what I have gathered it is carried by a nat and kills of the whitetail Deer population in a hurry. the numbers are sickning take a look at the Idaho fish and game web site
