Default What would you do?

Ok so heres my dilema. I went scouting with my father in law over east for our up coming muzzle loader hunt. We saw two rigs camped in our usual spot so we knew there was some sliver slingers around but had know idea where they would be so we decided to stick to the locked road so we wouldnt foul anybodys hunt up. We walked out my favorite road into a burned area right out in front of god and everyone I mean we were visable without a doubt and what do you think is there to meet us but a dandy bull beatin the tar out of a little tamarack tree not 40 yards off the road . I'm thinkin hey we found elk things are lookin up for huntin season! We sit down and enjoy the show the bull was to engrosed in his tree killin to notice us and the wind was helpful to. Thats when we heard another bull below the road bugiling and scraping. We could not see the bull so my first thought was it may be a bowhunter trying to get lucky. I told my fatherinlaw we should get out of the way but thats when the first bull started down the hill right at us. We were stuck and to make things worse a group of cows were working there way up the creek bottom to join the party. Sooo we sit and listen to these bulls and the cows chtin back and forth for a few minutes untill we convince ourselves that the bull below us is not a hunter and the bull above us finaly decided to go the other way. At one point I think I could have threw a rock at the tree killer. We get up and start down the road back to our rig and stoped on this old log deck to do some glassing with the spotting scope. We had been at it for about five minutes when my father in law says hey look at this. He tightens down the tripod and I take a look at what he seems to be a little excited about. Accross the drainage I take a double take at what I see because I honest to god cant belive my eyes. There was two bowhunters over there one was tellin us we were number one and the other was moonin us! We hustled back to the truck laughin our butts off the whole way. We waited around a while but it was still early in the mornin so we figured they would still be hunting. What would you have done? I thought we were doin the right thing and still do since they were so far off but if they were on the bull we saw did we do the right thing?

You did fine. I'm an arrow-slinger and I don't see what the problem was. I've learned to play the Elk off other people. I think the bowhunters were young and not very bright.

They were just upset at themselves for not hunting closer to the closed road.
Did you draw the East Grant tag??
If so, one has to always plan on someone being on or near an open or closed road in most of those areas.
Saw several nice bulls in '00 during the muzzleloader season over there, 200yds. into the closed roads

Good luck this year!!

I'm not tight lipped about fishing holes but I put to much time into elk to reveal where this was . But I will say its a rather coveted tag for the smoke sticks. Thanks for everyones input I hope you all laughed as much as we did. I'm sure those guys were probably just wishin they looked in to that wide open burn a little closer.

Had a similar incident happen while sturgeon fishing a few years ago. Saw a group walk down and cast into the bottom of the hole we were fishing. Once they hooked up, I looked over to see if it was a bigg'un. One of the 3 dudes mooned me. My bro-in-law and I still chuckle about that one.

As a stick flinger and rifle hunter, I can tell you you did nothing wrong. You had as much right to be there as they did. They were just a little grumpy because you were in the spot they should have been in (before you got there). Truth is they just aren't as good at hunting as you  .
