Ringed Hooks
I've only fished them a couple of times in Mexico, but they seemed to be the cat's meow with small live bait or gimpy baits that were not lively. Are they worth the extra $? They are not cheap.

Re: Ringed Hooks
They perform well.
Nice hookset placements.
The Gami ringed octopus hooks need to be thicker, Ive broken way too many already on tuNA

Re: Ringed Hooks
Mustads work just fine, inexpensive too, if you want to spend a bit more, Owners Mutu's or Hayabusa's,,,, Gami does make a thicker wired ringed hook, maybe that will help. Also using a J hook on live bait, try fishing it like a circle hook, when bit, throw the reel into gear, point the rod at the fish, let the rod load up and just lift the rod, usually the J hook will be right in the corner of the mouth too BUT it is nice to swing on the hook-set.
As for using ringed hooks, like so many other things, personal preference and whatever works for you.

Re: Ringed Hooks
There are advantages and disadvantages to thin and thicker hooks.
Thicker= Stronger
Thinner= Livelier bait..

Re: Ringed Hooks
Best I've found are Owner ringed flyliner hooks - #2's or #4's. Englund has them in Astoria - expensive at $35 for 45 hooks (at Englund - about 1/2 online), but If I'm going to pay $40 a day for bait (2 scoops - see other post), $200 for fuel, I am MORE than willing to pay an additional $1 for the best hooks in the business. If there is something better out there - let me know!!

Re: Ringed Hooks
I've (recently) used the Owner Super Mutu ringed semi-circles. They are WAY expensive, but pretty nice. Sharp as hell out of the box too! They are a bit on the thick side, but there will be no weak link had at the hook with that setup.

I have some larger ones - 1/0, but haven't used them - they look pretty good. I will try them next year. I did break 2 of the flyliner hooks this year - but a small percentage compared to the number of tuna caught on them.

Re: Ringed Hooks
I have used Owner #4 ringed live bait hooks and they work great. Expensive but have shown improved hookups.

Re: Ringed Hooks
I've been making my own rings and ringed hooks out of stainless wire.
I can mass produce the rings themselves, but TIG welding then takes a little time.
This way I can use whatever hook size, shape, configuration, make, model, etc. instead of setteling for what is (or usually isn't) available at the stores.
Anyone interested in talking my jive?
Trade-ies?
I also can make whatever size stainless gaff hooks with or without handle.
Think about it...

Re: Ringed Hooks
Ragnar (the wily jokester...)
It's not all in fun. I actually do make my own rings for big jigs, as I like to have the hooks put on with welded rings. Those split rings just don't cut it. (I know, I have tried the Owner super rings, and they are good, but they are still a split ring...) The action with a welded ring is just better. (See what happens when you are a perfectionist and a machinist.)
So what I do is this: I buy a stainless steel spring with about a .312-.437 i.d. then make a single cut right down one side of the spring. There you have it. A big pile of rings that just need brazing.
I have had exceptional luck too brazing these with silver solder. You need Mapp gas to generate enough heat, and you need to be careful not to discolor the lure, but the results are worth it.

Re: Ringed Hooks
I hope this isn't a no-no: Try www.ringedhooks.com. They have most major brands in stock or they will order and ring whatever brand you want for a price that is better than anywhere else I've seen.
Another option is tying your regular 'J' or circle hook on with a perfection loop. We've used it in Mexico for years on line down to 15# Izor with no failures for Yellowfin, Dorado, Marlin, whatever. It's quick and easy to tie. Give it a try.

Re: Ringed Hooks
We lost a sailfish this year in Mexico, because the perfection loop got caught on the edge of the hook eye. That is the first time it has happened, but for sailfish or marlin from now on it will be ringed hooks.

Re: Ringed Hooks
I had some knots fail because of what I think was the knot getting next to the sharp edge of the hook loop! Last year is was a thread about fishtraps about this time now it is ringed hooks, wonder why? :grin:
