Re: Who hunted Sauvies today!!!
I took my springer 3-6 pm yesterday. He took off a couple times and didn't get to work him real good. I talked to a couple guys who each got one bird. I'm going to have to get out again and spend some real time out there. Also, I am going to have to spend more time with my dog- he's still a hiper pup.

Re: Who hunted Sauvies today!!!
I was out yesterday afternoon for about 2 hours...a few people but not real crowded, ( it's only the second time I've done this). No shots in the Hunt or Stutzer areas, except we "startled" a few doves
I'll go again..

Re: Who hunted Sauvies today!!!
Is it possible to hunt out there without a dog? I have access to a little fiberglass boat and also some kayaks would that work for retrieving?

Re: Who hunted Sauvies today!!!
Jeremy...there is virtually no water out there right now, with the exception of a few VERY low water control structures. The odds of dropping a bird in the water are pretty small and even then you could probably fish it out with a stick. You will hav a tougher time finding the birds without a dog. See the posts above on some hints to get them on foot.

Jeremy:
We talked to a guy who spots roosters with binocs and stalks 'em. They hold real tight, unlike their wild brothren....He claims he does well. He just marks the spot and goes after them.

Re: Who hunted Sauvies today!!!
I went out yesterday morning with my hunting partner and we got there at 5:30 and there where 50 out of the 75 issued still avalible  . We hunted the dike (red suberban)by the Racetrack unit (with no dogs) and had 4 birds by 10:30 with 1 miss. Not many shots and the birds were not moving much. We had 1 bird that ran through a corn field for 100 yards before it took flight!
Over all the day was great, nice weather, filled tags, and got out of work!!
Happy hunting!!!

Re: Who hunted Sauvies today!!!
I believe the dike D-backer is refering to is not the The Columbia River Drainage District Dike but the dike that divides the eastern units of Sauvies Island. Units such as Racetrack, Mcnary, etc. are on the outside (westside of the dike)and units such as rentenar, pope, mudhen, dead willow and hunt are on the inside (eastside of the dike).
My father hunted the opener and killed one for two birds put up. The total for the day was something like 161 hunters and 86 birds.
I hunted Tuesday and Wed. Tuesday we killed one bird. The island total for Tuesday was 64 hunters and 8 birds. Pretty poor.
On Wed we put up 5 birds and killed three. Not sure what the totals were for the island. There was very little pressure on Tuesday and Wed.

Re: Who hunted Sauvies today!!!
The dike is a great place to hunt pheasant - however, page 28 of the "Oregon Game Bird Regulations" says "The Columbia River Drainage District Dike is closed to all hunting."
Too bad. The dike's cover and vantage point along the dike road are ideal for chasing roosters.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">It's not only a good vantage point for birds but to spot other hunters as well. I try no to hunt over other hunters but it is hard not to in that type of format. Good luck and be safe!!!!!

Re: Who hunted Sauvies today!!!
Just checked with the Manager's office (503-621-3488) at Sauvie Island regarding hunting on the dikes in the eastside management unit. His answer: "there's is no hunting allowed on any of the dikes." The large earthen berm that separates Johnson, Racetrack, Aaron, McNary from Hunt, Stutzer, Rentenaar, Mudhen, Dead willow, and Footbridge is a dike.
Not worth a citation folks.

Re: Who hunted Sauvies today!!!
I will have to check with the warden next time I am there. On Tuesday, the state police stopped me while I was standing on the dike hunting. If you are not able to hunt there, the state police are unaware of it.
