picket fence mishap (w/pic) court, of fisherman87
was driving down bayocean road and had to do a double take . I saw a boat suspended approx. 4 feet in the air atop the picket fence. it is currently low tide and I suspect that someone found the picket fence the hard way. i hope that whoever had the accident is ok. I suppose that they will try to get it off during high tide this evening.....
yet another reminder to be cautious in that area for sand bars, dead heads, and yes....the fence

Re: picket fence mishap
didnt have a camera with me but there were several other boats fishing in the area. perhaps one of them snapped a photo and with any luck they might post it at a later time....its definatly worth a look.

Re: picket fence mishap
Dang, its' getting dark or I'd go take a pic.
That's weird!
Too bad, too.
On second thought, would you want someone to go looky loo at your accident? I wouldn't! This is a bummer!

Re: picket fence mishap
this was no small boat either....it was about a 19'-20' alumaweld type boat (red) with top and side curtains. strangest thing ive seen in the bay in quite some time....and that really says something.

Re: picket fence mishap
i didnt have picture capabilities but let see if i can provide the mental image. this thing looked as if it was picked up horizontally by a crane and was placed perfectly atop several of the pililngs. just like the star atop the x-mas tree. It was difficult to see if it was damaged by the pillings or whether it was just sitting on top of them.....perhaps the paper will have a pic next week. if it does i will be sure to post it.

Re: picket fence mishap
Hmmmm....
Sideplaner and quickies might just work!
Seriously, for those of you who haven't spent time at the picket fence, the current often pushes laterally right toward the fence. On an outgoing, this could happen, as it obviously did.
Even on the incoming the current is sometimes squirly there - keep an eye on the fence and your lines! I have seen boats bang the pilings more than once when a Captain gets too close to the pilings and a rig gets hung up. Then in the ensuing excitement, well...
Hope no one was hurt (besides their pride - we KNOW that was hurt!)

Re: picket fence mishap
Seems strange to leave it like that. Who ever picked those folks up should have been able to drag them off without too much trouble at all. Heck just moving around on that boat you would have thougth that would be enough to knock it off balance... just noticed that it is a double row of pilings and he appears to have perched her perfectly between them. Thats a great pic! I think I would paint my boat a different color this weekend

What ? Don't you all moor your boat this way too?
If you zoom in on the pic, I think you will see a round Ifish sticker towards the back of the side window.
Overall not too bad, I've done worse....

Re: picket fence mishap
Amazing balance! Were they still inside, motionless and asleep waiting to fish the incoming? I hate to admit doing something similar down in Mexico. We were fishing inside of Punta Banda with very calm conditions,so I got in real close to the rocky shore. My buddy asked if we were too close cause he was getting nervous, I told him "No Worry's", the water is calm. Within 5 minutes, a surge came around the point and 4 large swells came out of nowhere, and pushed us up onto a huge rock, then washed out and left us there. The really bad part is it was high tide, so things were not going to get any better! To summarise, we had to push and drag it over the rock, then jump in before splashdown. I can feel for the people who did this, but not sure how you can stay that long directly over the top of two rows of pilings during the out going tide, and not know it? Haven't seen any rouge swells up in the picket zone lately!

OK, here is a little perspective on this. Many years ago, reeldick and I were last to pull in to a spot at the sand hole on the Trask. We couldn't quite figure out why no one had beat us to it.
We were fishing the outgoing with bobbers when suddenly, and i mean suddenly, the boat stopped floating. It seems we had anchored over a very large stump.
It was amazing how it happened just in the snap of a finger. I can assure you that once it did, his 18' Alumaweld flat bottom was not going anywhere. This was pre-digital days (thank goodness!) so we never were shown to the world as we sat in the boat, fully 3' or so out of the water, waiting for the tide to come back in. We just continued to fish, all while taking the ghawfahs of the people driving by and laughing about the boat up in the tree.
Now, I am speculating here, but I can imagine how that boat could easily have been trolling along, parallel to the fence, and while not noticing got pushed laterally by the current right over those pilings. Might have been a swell that placed it there (hopefully not too big a bang) but if the tide was going out, it EASILY could have been left high and dry.
This is not unimaginable to me at all. The good news is they got a good set to land on so the boat is stable. But no one was going to get it off, short of Mrs. Nature...

Speaking of runing your day, I didn't see an anchor line anywhere... hope they plan on being back out there before it floats free. No need to ruin the day twice.
Hope no one was hurt, and my regrets to the owner of that boat.

Re: picket fence mishap
Here we go...The first time for me fishing out of Memaloose I asked a guy at the boat ramp if there was anything in particular to look out for safety wise. The old timer said that it's pretty shallow on the other side but other than that you are good to go!. We launch and do a bit of trolling. After a while my fishing partner makes a casual remark about some "funny looking water" ahead. We are both looking at what appears to be a rip or tide line. As we get closer and closer, we both see that the "funny water" is a row of pilings 4 inches below the surface! Bang we are into them. We are reeling in lines, gunning the kicker, and generally looking like clowns gone wild. We found the picket fence in an up close and personal way. To this day when either one of us sees what might be a hazard it's commonly refered to as "funny water". Welcome to the picket fence.

Re: picket fence mishap
When you go hi and dry, there is no chance to rock the boat off. That stump in the Trask sand hole had Hog and I in an instant. The boat stopped moving and a second later we were hi and dry. No movement, no rocking, we were there for the duration of low tide.It was flat out embarassing, especially when the guy down stream from us said " the bottom of your boat sure is shinny."
The worst part of it was later in the day we saw the same guy and he yelled over " I didn't recognize you with your boat in the water."
I feel sorry for the owner of that sled. He'll hear about this for years to come.

Re: picket fence mishap
Sorry but the pic made me laugh out loud..........Newbees, gotta love um.
Ok, I'fess up
It was probably sometime in the mid 70's, I had just traded my 13 ft western for a older clack DB, stuck my honda on it and I was fishing. Well, There had been a great bite in the piling hole for a few days and the weekend was comming, so Sat early I launched and went down to get a spot. Bud Wallender was already there at the top so I took the middle, tried to make sure I missed all the pilings, I had my transducer epoxied to the fiberglass hull right under my seat, kinda pointed back at tims but it was safe there, dopped anchor and waited 2 hr for light, daylight and low tide came and by then the hole was filled. After the 4th fish with 2 killed all of a sudden the boat quit rocking, the flexable floor was now bowing up and we had problems. Started the motor but no luck, so we both got on one side tipped the DB way over and hard reverse, rocking up and down, back and forth, finally we slipped off backwards and sideways. By this time the floor was about a foot higher than normal, but the bast was fine. Tightened up on the anchor ropes and back to fishing. All the commotion upset a few people and one old timer was heard to say "dann Newbees" and we just took it cause it was deserved. I was a little embarassed but we caught a few more nice fish, I remember releasing a 40+ chrome hen cause I wanted some good meat to smoke for christmass presents and my buddy who had only caught about a doxen salmon in his life caught 9 that day. Just some of the hazards when you are inexperienced and in the dark.
I hope everything turned out Ok for the sled on the picket fence and thanks to whoever took the pic.

Re: picket fence mishap (w/pic) court, of fisherman87
That picture was taken just before they hung the banner over the side that said "Chicken Bento $4.95"
If you think that's amazing you should have seen the guy back his truck & trailer out to that spot to launch the boat !!

Maybe a boat advertisement "SO light and fast, it hardly touches the water, and you can park it anywhere"

Re: picket fence mishap (w/pic) court, of fisherma
I have been told that there was a paraplegic on board and was removed safley. I have no idea how many others were on board. The boat was removed around 1AM. Folks that bay is filling in fast and full of suprises, please be carefull. I have seen so many boats over the years going full bore in both the rivers and bays, not haaving a clue,,,,BANG,,, STUMPS AND SAND BARS. No fish is worth that. Also if you have never got on a sand bar, trust me you will.

Thanks for making us all aware of the dangers of the sandbars in Tillamook Bay. You mentioned it is filling up fast.
Do you think faster than any other period in recent Geologic time?
Would you attribute over logging of the forests in the mountains adjacent to the streams and rivers that feed into the bay as a possible reason for this accelerated and increased sediment?
Just wondering, I'm just a valley city boy. Not wise in the ways of the country or woods.

Re: picket fence mishap (w/pic) court, of fisherma
Perfectdrift and I got stuck on an island near Deep River a couple years back duck hunting with someone who shall remain un-named in un-named's boat. I ended up hunting for scaup out of the auquapod while waiting for the tide to come in. I was jeered for bringing a 20ga Benelli hunting for these tough birds...I ended up taking a scotch triple with one shot at 50yards with a 3" #4 Hevishot load. Sometimes good things come to those who wait until o dark thirty for the tide to come in. I certainly would have put out the sidewinder planer or bobber and fished it.

Re: picket fence mishap (w/pic) court, of fisherma
BCF. We have in years past been able to dregde out the bay and the boat launches. Now the enviro's have put a stop to that and a lot of things that we all could enjoy. Back when the Tillamook Bay was 30 foot deep every where, they were logging all the hills and doing it by clear cutting everything and not worring about replanting it. Sure is not that way now. Or have you not taken time to check it out. Please do not get me wrong, I do belive that we need a balance. Porbblem is some folks want it all one way. If they get there way, well we will just sit at home and tell our grand kids about the good old day when we could catch and eat hatchery fish and our houses were built out of lumber from logs and our paper (even toilet paper) came from logs.
