Re: Activists plan to protest state-run pheasant
I am willing to bet that unless there is physical contact (and maybe not even than), not a single "protester" will be even cited let alone arrested. Regardless of the laws that they bring will disrupting the hunt.

Re: Activists plan to protest state-run pheasant
Heck, if I wasn't going NE hunting elk for the next couple of weekends I'd definitely volunteer my lab and my services for a young buck to shoot one out of the sky in front of a bunch of tree huggers. It would almost be too much fun to see thier faces when you've got a couple of birds hanging from your gunbarrel on the way out. Maybe even give a little twitch to it in front of them for a fake dying kick or something to add to the fire, or crying, whichever happens first.

Re: Activists plan to protest state-run pheasant
what if a bunch of us showed up to protest the protestors!!! We bring a bunch of BIG signs that read: "Oregon, this state hunts. Get over it!" half of us stand in front of them, half of us stand behind them. They are blocked from the media coverage they seek. The cameras won't even be able to see the guy in the chicken suit! You know there'll be a guy in a chicken suit there, pretending to be a pheasent.

Re: Activists plan to protest state-run pheasant
Why not start a new movement. We'll call it FPETA
OR Freinds of Peta, we'll scare up some money via a giant fund raiser, lots of media coverage, signs, Birkenstock's etc, etc.
The goal of this new group will be to buy all the animal costumes we can get our hands on.
The stipulation being that they have to go into the field on opening day and we'll donate these animal suits to them, free of charge.
We'll let the Laws of Nuture take care of the rest.

Re: Activists plan to protest state-run pheasant
tailchaser .....
I was thinking the same myself.
Since I'm not going east (even though I'm a rabid bowhunter) and I have two very eager labs, I think I may volunteer mine & their services.
The guy on Larz finally admitted that he would prefer that all hunting be stopped .... fishing is next...

Re: Activists plan to protest state-run pheasant
I'll guaranty you they have fishing in their gunsights, they always have.
I wander why you never see any of these groups back in the Midwest Farm belt?
Maybe we can go together and get them 1 WAY plane tickets back to the Dakotas on opening day of Pheasant Hunting, or better yet Duck season when the temps are below zero.
Any more, Bird Hunting to the Farmers "Leasing Land" often means the ability to keep their familly farms away from the banks and Large Corporations.

Re: Activists plan to protest state-run pheasant
Just curious about everyone's thoughts...
The news release says they'll picket at the Clackamas office of ODFW at noon Thursday, then it says only "may be demonstrating at some of the actual hunts..."
Last time, this group was outnumbered by media, including myself and a photographer.
I think our news department (I'm sports) has decided against covering it. How do you feel about that?

I think it would be great to not cover them...that's exactly what they don't want to happen. I was sicken by the media attention they got for the rabbit hunt. It would also put less pressure on ODFW. My 2-cents.

Re: Activists plan to protest state-run pheasant
Bill,
I feel good that your news department won't be there. I think the media may be starting to realize these people are kooks and whacos who's real agenda is force feeding us all nutra-loaf made from dandelions and seaweed. Rest assured these people have one agenda, equal rights for all vertabrates.
The vast majority of Oregonians embrace the spirit and culture of the West, which includes hunting, fishing, and living with nature.
Follow me down this slippery slope for a moment... Their agenda precludes them from eating meat due to the inhumane treatment of the animals. Soon, we will have to quit farming, as well, to save the earthworms. At some point, it's nothing but hydroponically grown tomatoes and sprouts for the humans. Then soilant green...

No media coverage. but don't ever take them lightly or stop paying attention to their tactics. They have already gotten way more attention and press then they should and thru this exposure they are able to promote their agenda. Know any Cougar hunters who no longer can use their Dogs?

Crit'rGit'r, That lars larsen show was the highlight of my day. It was definately worth the price of admission. Also, are you the same Crit'rGit'r that signed Larry Mooore's guestbook on his home page at fishingworks .com? Just curious. I also like what it says at the bottom of your page "From the peoples republic of Eugene". That says it all.

<font size="2" face="verdana, arial, helv">That may or not be true...but only about 6% of Oregonians buy hunting licenses...so the non-hunters have us vastly outnumbered. In Multnomah COunty only 1.9% buy hunting licenses...in Lane Co, its 4%...Marion 3.3%...Washington County is lowest in Oregon at 1.6% licensed hunters. In Harney county the number is only 10%. Top percentage of hunters by county in Oregon is 13% in Grant County...and Grant county has only 7,500 people total. So, that's why the anti-hunters gain as much as they do...its easy to play on the sympathies of non-hunters. So, don't confront the anti-hunters...if there's no confrontation, there's no story...and no publicity, etc.

Re: Activists plan to protest state-run pheasant
I say take them out in the field and use them to flush birds. I've been on a few of these "chicken shoots" and the pheasants are sometimes hard to get to fly. Bill - I love your sports reporting, but have to say I'd be shocked if the news department didn't cover this - they usually eat this liberal tree hugger stuff up! If they really abstain - good for them!

We need to do is work with these people, let's sick 'em on the gill netters.
Haven't some states passed laws that protect individuals while they are hunting or fishing from protesters and their actions?

Activists plan to protest state-run pheasant
Register Guard September 14, 2003
Activists plan to protest state-run pheasant hunt
MEDFORD - An animal-rights group plans to protest next week at pheasant hunts the state sponsors to introduce teen-agers to the sport.
In Defense of Animals has criticized the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife program for teens under 18 to accompany adults on hunts for pen-raised pheasants planted in wildlife areas.
A meeting was scheduled for Tuesday for state officials to discuss how to handle the protesters. Any interference with a legal hunt is a violation of Oregon law.
ODFW Director Lindsay Ball said he would not cancel any of the 10 hunts scheduled statewide next week unless there was a danger of injury to employees or the public.
Radio show Larz Larson had an interview Sept 15 with one of these folks.

Re: Activists plan to protest state-run pheasant
I can here it now....................
[protester yelling at the hunters]
"You guys are BAD, BAD, BAD for shooting those cute little defenseless birdies."
[one protester talking to another]
Hey did you bring anything to eat?
No, didn't you ?
We better get some food, we're going to be out here for a long day harrassing these hunters.
I know, I run back into town and grab us an eight piece bucket of chicken...........ok.

Re: Activists plan to protest state-run pheasant
Point well taken, GutShotApe. I had no ide the hunting license numbers were so low. I still stand by my statement about Oregonians embracing the culture of the West. Most of my friends hunt, fish, or camp/hike. Some do all three. I still think when put to a vote in our great state on hunting or not, the vote in favor of hunting would be in the 70% region.
The thing that really gets me about these people is they fail to realize the cultural aspect of hunting and fishing. It's something most of our parents or grandparents passed on to us, and we will do it with our children. If this were an argument about whether or not South American tribesmen, who now live in the city, should be allowed to plant Howler Monkeys in a forest for their children to hunt to get in touch with their culture, these antis would be burning the furniture in the capital to allow it to happen. I'll never understand these people.

Bill,
I think you have an excellant idea, ignore them and they have accomplished nothing.
Tailchaser,
Your suggestion, even if only kidding, as well as many of the other comments in this thread simply play into the hands of the anti's and support what they want to masses to believe; that hunters are ignorant, backwoods boors.
What would be the benefit to hunters in proving the anti's right?

Bill,
Instead of giving these wackos any press, you should do an article on the father and son teams bonding and having a great time together. Focus on the bond and heritage and less on the kill.

Re: Activists plan to protest state-run pheasant
They're not wackos, in fact Matt Rossell is very articulate and has his arguments well-arranged. They just have a different opinion and express it in a democracy. The decision to not cover is based solely on news value to our readers and the most judicious use of space...If it were the Humane Society or a celebrity, we'd probably be there. If there were more people than media (unlike the last time when cameras surrounded the small group), we'd be there. And we most certainly will be there if some of you decide to protest the protesters or shout them down...That's an event worth noting.
Actually, they're planning to picket the Clackamas office today and I'll probably go down there to buy my pheasant permit.

Re: Activists plan to protest state-run pheasant
Well the big protest is a bust. They figured out if they actually came to the office nobody would see them so all 10-15 of them are standing at the corner of Evelyn and Jennifer (a few blocks away) so SOMEBODY can see them.

Re: Activists plan to protest state-run pheasant
Guys,
These types of protests are just the smoke screen that these anti-hunting (fishing and trapping) people blow in our face while they are getting the real job done behind the scenes.
Just look at what the humane society has been able to acomplish....sponsoring anti hunting/trapping inititives in most states, successfully outlawing some, all with no bunny suits. Think about that. These are the people we really need to worry about.
I agree that no activist group needs media attention, but the truth needs to come out about the less radical, more politically active groups.

Guys look at the bright side of this. Maybe they can be used as flushers. As they are out stomping all through the cover they may actually help out in flushing the birds.
