Live sandshrimp are illegal in WA!!
I was at Sportsman's Warehouse and asked this guy in the fishing section if he had any fake sandshrimp. I proceeded to tell him I wanted them for a substitute, and he got all warped and said live sandshrimp are illegal in WA, and if they were legal that Sportsman's would sell them!!
He then asked me where on earth I've found live sandshrimp for sale. I just kinda looked at him...didn't really know what to say to that considering I've used them pretty much all my life. Anyways, he then told me to make sure I kill them before putting them on my hook.
Any insight into this?

Hmmm. Interesting indeed. If that's the case, theres alott of folks that are breaking the law. I guess they dont live all that long once ya get a hook stuck through them. :whazzup:

Having lived and fished in Washington my whole life (50 years) I've never heard of this rule. I just checked the online pamphlet for WDFW and can find no such reference. The rule book does say that you cannot use live fish as bait, but that doesn't include sandshrimp--by my interpretation.
With all of the articles published over the years, you would think that someone would be talking about this. My bet is the guy didn't know what he was talking about.

Sportsman's Warehouse is a chain store like Wallmart. With the exception of a very few local items all the stores stock the same stuff regardless of local laws or target species.
If the option is available you would be better served to spend your money in a local store that caters to the local laws and target species, and can provide usefull insight into the use of the products they sell.
Sounds like you already found this out though.

Isnt Sportsmans Warehouse based in Utah or somewhere across the Rockies? I know that a few of their employees transferred from there to open the Portland location.
Maybe all they know is live bait is prohibited.? What about nightcrawlers then.

I'm pretty sure the rules also state that you can't use live cured eggs either.
So, next time you are out fishing in WA, make sure those cured eggs are dead before you use them! :smile:
Same with sardine wraps. Can't use the live wraps. Can only use the dead wraps.
