Default Willamette Unit Hunt #815 Info Needed

Was wanting to know if anyone had any ideas for this unit as to where to go have a chance at a successful hunt.

My friend has a any sex deer tag that runs from 10/4 to 11/30.

Any information regarding public or private land would be greatly appreciated. Would be willing to trade a fishing trip for information that would lead to a successful hunt.

Thanks Much.

You probably already know that you're looking at darn near 100% private land. I hunt the Willamette Unit at a friend's grandfather's house in the Mulino/Molalla area. If you're in Ky. then it's gonna be pretty tough to get out there and knock on some doors, but if you're in Aloha, that's what I would recommend. Good luck, sorry I can't be more helpful.

Almost impossible to get permission to hunt. All private land and all posted. If you have a boat you can drift the Willamette and stand a pretty good chance of nailing one along the banks. This method is actually quite common. Right at the mouth of the Yamhill where it drains into the Willamette would be an excellent place. Just anchor up and wait. See deer in that area all the time. Put in a Wheatland and drift down to the Newberg ramp. Need two rigs but sounds like you could handle that. Good luck.

Cagey,

I have a drift boat & am a pretty decent drift boat handler but is there anything to be concerned about in terms of dangerous water there ???

On State-owned land within the Willamette Greenway rifles are illegal for deer hunting...some of these parcels are posted with greenway signs, some aren't. I have hunted the Willamette and taken a few deer...mostly with 12-gauge slugs.

Thanks GSA,

Please keep the info coming because my friend who has this tag is very concerned about putting the tag to use.

We realize that this unit consists of mostly private land but if anyone knows anyone who owns land in that unit who would be willing to trade a great fishing trip please let us know.

It is a long shot we understand but this guy really feels that it is important to utilize any tag.

Thanks for the replies thusfar.

HogHunter - The Oregon state Marine Board and the State Parks Dept jointly published the Willamette River Recreation Guide in May 1995. It has maps for river drifters which show huntable state-owned land. Don't know if copies are still available or not.

There are deer along the river...quite a few in some areas, danged few in others....its very brushy land and Himalaya blackberries have taken over many, many areas reducing habitat and making walking difficult or impossible. Next to my pump shotgun (w/rifled slug barrel), my 2nd most important gear item is a pair of heavyduty pruning shears. You'll need 'em if you hunt the riparian area. There are no dangerous rapids but you need to know how to run a boat and avoid sweepers...and don't go down any back or side channels unless you know they don't dead end in an impassible log jam...which a lot of 'em do.

There is some pretty good hunting in the foothills between Molalla and Silverton. The property is mostly private timber company owned and usually has great access, depending on fire conditions. Tons of road hunters, but if a guy's willing to get out of his rig and hunt hard there is a lot of deer. Access to the area is from Sawtell Rd. from Molalla, Crooked finger from Scotts Mills, and Drakes Crossing Above Silverton. KHH, drop me a note if you want more specifics. Maybe we could hook up and I'll show you around.

Woody,

I believe the area you are talking about is out of the Willamette unit and is actually part of the Santiam unit.
