Default My First Deer!

Well, I've only been shooting a bow for about a week now. And I've already killed my first deer. I shot it midday on Saturday, at about 25 yards. It was a blacktail spike buck, so it's no trophy. But it was exciting!

I got a decent shot at it. It was about mid-mass. At first I thought it was a little too far back, but upon opening him up I barely got lung, liver and spleen. So it was a little far back, but it did the trick. He ran about 50yds after being shot, and died shortly thereafter.

Overall it was a great day. We dressed it, skinned it and hung it over night. And the next day(yesterday) we boned it all out. And we had tenderloins that night. Very tasty!

Here's a pic...

(Keep in mind, I'm 6'3" about 200lbs, so it's not as small as it looks)

Now I am just waiting for Salmon to pick up on the Willamette!

P.S. It's the first and only deer I've shot at. And boy was I shaky. I'm surprised I got as good of a hit as I did. Praise the Lord.

Right on! My first archery critter was a blacktail spike also. We took it to camp to hang it and some older guys asked who shot the jackrabbit. Nice looking deer!

Don't let anyone tell you size matters. A little one will eat better than a big one anyday. IT will eat twice as good as a missed deer!!!!!

Congrats on a great looking blacktail. Very well done. Great photo, too.

Bravo!

You should share the whole story when you have time. I just LOVE first deer-kill stories. Aren't you surprised the deer didn't hear your heart thumping and scare off?

A little garlic salt and lemon-pepper, fried in hot grease, but don't over-cook....MMMmmmmm.... and a little white gravy from the grease poured over some mashed potatoes........MMMmmmmm...... and throw in a can of corn.....MMMMMMMMMM.....

I may postpone elk season for a couple days and go find a big fat doe...that sounds SOOOO good!

Glad you were able to get a pic too!

Way to go! That first deer with a bow is always a trophy, no matter how big the rack is!
