Covered a LOT of ground tonight glassing clear cuts only to see no elk and a couple of deer. One really fresh rub right along the road but otherwise no sign of many elk. This glorious area was in the cascades, just east of Eugene. Guess I'll cross that area off of the list.

I will... Hunted sage-hens on the east side of the state this weekend. Had our birds by 10:00.
Three of us and the dog all had a good time.

Saturday-September 6th--BULL DOWN!!

Killed the second bull I saw that morning-a nice 5x5 that I had to sneak in on and kill. Not much for talking though.

So far this week I've called in three bulls, one was shot and killed and the two others narrowly escaped. One last night (8th) we had him at 65 yards in an open area but couldn't coax him for 15 more yards. That sucker has 9 lives and we've called him in 4 times now. Add a couple more close calls and he's on life #6 right now. His luck is bound to run out here soon. Other than that I know of three bulls killed in the last weekend. One large 5x6 and the other were rags. That's the scoop on the S.Coast.

Friday night I took 1eyed to a spot and after hiking down into the "hole" and finding nothing, we went back to the truck and spooked a herd off the road.
Saturday I shot over the back of a deer, then called a bull to about 60 yards but he must have winded me.
No meat yet.

Got a chance to get out for the first time this weekend.Headed east to the Ochocos. Saw a lot of good looking bucks on Saturday, but no shots. Also ran into a herd of about 30 cows with 3 smaller bulls. Lots of cow talk, but no ansewers from the Bulls. By the looks of the bulls in that herd, they havn't started doing much in the way of rutting yet. My guess is there has to be a bigger one than those around. Decided to go back and chase some deer Sunday morning. Ran into a 20+ inch 3 point, but he gave us the slip. I managed a decent smaller buck (3x2)just after we lost the big guy. It was warm over there, wish I could have hung around for a little of the weather, but my tags punched!

Hunted sage grouse past weekend. Lots of birds this year and the weather fairly warm on Sat. High altitude and hot weather hard on weekender dogs and people. Dogs and people need plenty of fluids at high altitude. Birds cooperated, done by noon. Numerous antelope, some deer, one prairie falcon. Good time in the sage.
