Default Are they bugling yet? West side...

So, I've spent several days scouting in Southwest WA around Mount Saint Helens in the Souixon, Marble, Battle Ground, Coweeman, Yale, and Toutle units, and haven't heard nary a bugle, nor have I gotten any response to my calls. Is the rut starting later this year than last? Anybody heard them talking yet. Last year at this time, in these areas I heard quite a few screamers, even late into the morning. This year, nothing. Input? TOC.

I would imagine they are bugling up a storm right now.

Yea some are bugling in western WA. I chased one herd around for 3 days with my archery tag, but couldn't seal the deal. Had 2 shots, but choked and didn't take either one. Actually was shaking so hard from bull fever that I dropped my arrow on one occasion.

Anyway, archery season just ended in Washington on Wednesday so you won't have as much competition until Muzzleloaders next month.

Seen any grouse while you've been out?

Hey Overfishin.
Been out scouting 2 eves in the Yale unit near where I smokepoled my 5x5 last year and haven't heard a thing.
My buddies and I think they are late this year. Going back Sat. morning to try again. Maybe the morning hours will produce better results. Haven't had a chance to hit the coweeman yet.
Good Luck

The bulls are scream'n but the woods are still locked up for fire danger. What's your method for scouting in these units when they are closed? They are writing some pretty good tickets!

Drake- As far as I know, the woods I've been poking around in, aren't closed. I've seen a couple forest service guys and nobody has said anything to me, plus, earlier this week I was in the woods with lots of archers. Who closed which properties? Weyerhaueser? Thanks, TOC.

As of right now, Weyerhauser, Cambell group(Ryderwood unit), and fibre land east of I-5 are closed due to fire danger. Cambell group in Cathlamet and Fibre land west of I-5 are open for walk in only. Cambell said they needed at least 3-4 more inches of rain. I have heard of a few nasty tickets being given out from Weyerhauser security and Cambell security in the last week. Not sure about Forest Service land.
