Weekend Results (w/pics)
Well it was a great weekend to be hunting. Light drizzle, cool temps and elk hunting, well I'll let the pictures tell the tale. The first pic is my dad sitting on a landing spotting elk trying to find him a legal bull to shoot.
Then, the next day as we were watching some bedded elk about 120 yards away, a large bear (300+) came roaming near where we were waiting. We had the camera out to take pics of the elk bedded down by us and my friend took a picture of me trying to sneak an arrow into the bear. Luckily for him a small twig deflected my arrow and it ended up getting a tree instead in front of him.
This picture is of me bugling into one of the canyons we hunt early in the morning. One bull was down in the very bottom of this stinking canyon calling back to me immediately but I couldn't convince the old man to go crawling down into it.
Finally the results from saturday morning's hunt. My friend and I spotted this bull walking into the timber, so we circled around and got the wind right and moved in above him. He was all alone so I pulled out the Hoochie Mama, and a reed and proceeded to sound like a group of cows about 100 yards above him. After about 5 min, he was on his way. He got within 6 yards of Craig and stood motionless for what seemed like an eternity after craig drew back. There was a rootwad in the way and eventually the bull knew something was up and bolted. I cow called quickly and he stopped broadside and looked back at 40 yards. Craig had a pass-thru shot through both lungs and he only went another 30-40 yards and piled up. He's a little 3x3 but he's missing his G2's on both sides. Oh well, Craig was happy and is always a ton of fun when a plan comes together.
Finally the best part of the story after walking our hiney's off, the bull died within 40 yards uphill of a dirt road in-which I was able to get the wheeler to and was able to drag him downhill to the truck whole. I walk everywhere until a kill is made, that's when the beauty of a wheeler comes in handy but I refuse to hunt off of them.
Finally that night (saturday) a friend of mine that was supposed to go earlier wanted to head out. After a nap and some grub we headed back out. I had him in the middle of a herd (20 animals) and we were trying to get the big bull to come to the decoy (montana) but with live ladies running around and some sleezy chicks at that all I could get to us were the spikes. Unfortunately, it's 3 pt or better where I'm at otherwise they would've died also. So that's the weekend in a nutshell for saturday. Oh yeah, I slept in on sunday, hopped in the boat to fish with the old man in a derby and nailed a 25 lb nook in less than 5 min. I love the S.Coast!!

Cool beans. Any elk in the back of your pickup is a good one. I shot a spike a few years ago near my father-inlaws farm and used a tractor with a front end loader to haul it out. Boy did I feel spoiled  .

Re: Weekend Results (w/pics)
Yeah, buddy I knew you'd like that pic. Any pic with a dead elk in it is a good one. If all goes well there'll be another one dead tonight. I have a 4 pt. and his posse patterened to a tee, and I'm hoping I can get dad in position for the shot. The plan is good, we'll see if the elk cooperate. I keep sweet talking the spikes with the group within range, so hopefully he'll wander close tonight.
So how was the Cascades?? The army of bowhunters in your spot yet? And for your sake I've laid off the face paint. I use a headnet attached to that hat, but it's friggn hot as the dickens hiking with it. I guess you take your lumps for everything but I miss the GI Joe photos a little. Nothing like looking like a crazed Rambo for the Greenies at home.

Re: Weekend Results (w/pics)
A couple guys in my pack started wearing face masks this year. One of them left it in camp after the first day because it was so hot, the other one is just being stubborn. They are nice once you set up though.
Headed up in the hills tonight myself, looking at an area I havent been into in years. Critters should be on the move though so we'll see. This deer tag is starting to get uncomfortable in my wallet.

Re: Weekend Results (w/pics)
I know what you mean about the uncomfortable tag thing. It's itching me also. Pretty hard to watch elk walk by thinking of "JERKY" on the hoof, but I'm holding out for that monster in the NE to come calling those last 10 days. I leave on the 18th and will pack in on the 19th. I can hardly friggn wait. Hope the wife doesn't see the care package from Cabela's coming this week for the hunt! Could get ugly if she finds the pricetag in the package before I get home to hide it!!

Re: Weekend Results (w/pics)
Thanks for sharing your adventure with us, great pics and story. That is some steep country, I can certainly understand your dads reluctance dropping into one of those canyons. If you did drop in, I'd recommend taking along a skillet and fork, eat the critter on the spot, otherwise it may spoil by the time you got out the following week.
Now, I need to find a purty elk to hang my tag on.
Don't suppose he's got a bigger brother close by?
Congrats on the great weekend!!

Re: Weekend Results (w/pics)
Where have you been going Mello?? The usual Coquille boy Middlecreek area? I've heard of a lot of people hunting up there this year. I know of a big boy on Menasha if you want to chase him closer to your end of the woods. Only if you repay me sometime with a They just opened up at least to walk in hunting from this last storm and it's about a mile hike in. But anyhow, drop me an email for that one. (P.S. it's near where I thumped mine last year)

Re: Weekend Results (w/pics)
Just name your favorite flavor of Barley-Pop TC... Sunday I drove all over Tioga Creek, Burnt Mnt, N Fk Ridge Rd, Moon Creek...trying to re-learn everything. Having been away for about 10 years, nothing looks the same. Oh, and where did all the clearcuts go? Yikes!!! If I'd known things were gonna be like this, I'd have taken it more serious when I was a kid.

WOW. Congrats on the successful harvest. Your post was one of the best I have read. Great detail and the photos really brought me to the hunt. Thank you.

The wife says some of that area looks familiar, minus the bear part. Good luck on your trip.
