Default Scopes

I have a Remington 700 ADL .308 and need to put a scope on it. I was thinking of a Leupold M8-4x33. I like the idea of a fixed power but I am also considering a compact 2x7. What are your choices and why?

I think your choices are right on the money.

I have Leupold 3x9's on all my hunting rifles, although I rarely crank them up beyond 4x when I'm ready to shoot. I do use the 9x to glass horns occasionally, but rely more and more on my binos for that.

Whatever you buy, go with good quality, and remember, the higher the power the harder it is to hold 'em steady.

Both are great choices. I prefer a variable in the country I hunt. That way I can keep it down on 2x when I'm in thick brush and dial it up if I'm hunting really open stuff.

I was considering the 2-7 or the 4x for my new rifle too, and i went with the vx2 2-7. The new 2-7 has multicoat 4 exterior lens coatings, and the fixed 4 has the regular coatings the old variX2 had. Which means the new variable should be a little brighter. The m8 4x33 has the advantage of fewer lenses, so it will be brighter than the old variables, but not the new ones, and is a super rugged scope.

The thing that really bothers me is the price. A new vx1 2-7 is much cheaper than the fixed 4x, and leupold recently upgraded the lens coatings on the vx1 line, so now the only difference is the vx1 has friction windage and elevation adjustments and the vx2 has click adjustments. NEW VX1

I would not get the compact 2-7, the regualr 2-7 weighs only 10.5 oz and is very small and light scope. My choice would be a VX1 2-7, but make sure its the new one.

I did not relize that any other scopes were made besides Leupold. When you have a problem they fix it no questions asked regardless of the age of the scope. Their product is first rate and their service is just of the charts. I have never heard one complaint from anyone about Leuplod not standing behind their warranty which is rare these days.

I bought a Remington 700 ADL in 1971 and put a Bushnell Scopechief 2.5-8x (purchased in the Ft Ord, CA PX for about $56). Have killed deer and elk with it. Maybe I'm just lucky, but that old scope has never fogged or caused me any problems whatsoever all these years. As stated above I always carry on 2.5 (unless on a stand..problem is half the time when I start walking I forget to put it down to 2.5 (cost me a buck once trying to make a close running shot on 8x but that's a different story :depressed: ) Just remember you usually get what you pay for, however expensive doesn't always mean better. Have fun!

What about Weaver Grand Slams scopes?

I am not very familar with them, personall, but am hearing some great things about them. Enough to make me consider changing out to the 4.5-14x40!

I have heard these new scopes are up competeing with the likes of zeiss scopes but in the 300-400 price range. The company has been around since 1930.

Are they hype or are they worth getting?

A zeiss conquest 3-9 runs less than $400. Weaver may have been around since 1930, but they have been sold at least twice and are currently made in japan. A good scope? I think so. And i considered one, but decided on a leupold instead. Leupold is made local, they have the BEST reputation for ruggedness, and they have a fanacical following... go figure? And you just cant beat the new VX1 for price...

Got to agree with Leupold and a variable scope.

I always had a fixed scope, but switched to a variable a few years ago on a friends advice. Now I don't know how I ever hunted without it. It's great if you hunt in varying conditions. Took my deer 2 years ago in open terrain at 330 yards with the scope on 9x. Last year hunted close terrain and shot my deer at 20 yards with the scope on 3x. Don't need a scope at that range, but you get the point.

I own 4 Leuplod scopes and would not buy any thing else, I have a compact 3-9x33 sliver finish on my stainless remington model 7 in a 7mm-08 and it is a perfect match nice and light combo

I put the Leupold compact 2x7 on my Savage 300wsm. Makes for a nice package. In hindsight I would not have paid the extra for the Leupold dot reticle. Not the best choice for low light conditions or dark backgrounds, but it was my choice and I'll adjust.

leupold will change the recticle to any of the ones they offer for you for $48. http://www.premierreticles.com/ will change it to any of the ones they offer for a price, the german #4 is $50, and they dont void the leupold warranty.
