Jet Blue plane has landing gear trouble
Right now on MSNBC they are tracking a plane whoses nose landing gear wheel is 90 degree off center and will not retract. It is trying to burn off fuel and then attempt to land.
Good Luck to those on board and the capt.

Good luck. They sound confident about the landing, but you just never know the missing variable in the equation.

They are down! And SAFE! That pilot needs a medal at the very least. Perfect landing. Thank God they are all safe.

If you want to see replays of it... turn on CNN - been 70% of their material tonight. The other 30% is Rita. Man - I wish we had CNN International.

Re: Jet Blue plane has landing gear trouble
Nothing like a little luck and a ton of skill to get everyone back to the pavement safely. Serious props to the flight crew--they alone are the reason why 146 folks are alive tonight.

Re: Jet Blue plane has landing gear trouble
Very nice landing. Well done to the flight crew.
For the record, in 30 years of ATC I have seen several "gear problem" landings including a PSA DC-9 with no gear and a Delta jet with no right main.
No one was injured in any of them. Wheels are nice but the first aircraft operated on skids. A blown tire on landing is more likely to get an off-runway excursion than a gear that won't come down.

Re: Jet Blue plane has landing gear trouble
I was wondering what caused the 90 degree stick. Did the landing gear fail on retraction from take off?
Can you imagine the cheers on board when it stopped?
to the pilot and all involved in getting that plane down safe!

Re: Jet Blue plane has landing gear trouble
They did a great job, for sure. I saw a smaller plane come down out at Troutdale one night with no front landing gear. The pilot did a great job on that one too, she eased that thing down on it's nose and slid to a perfect landing. Major spark show!

They said another A320 had a simular problem a few years ago and it turned out that failed o rings in the hydo system caused the wheels to stay turned. That one ended differently though - the wheels straightened out when they touched down.
My Dad who was a pilot in WW2 and Korea didn't think there was going to be a problem other than the 2 fold drama the news folks made of it, guys landed planes with no landing gear all the time after having it shot away.
The one thing that kills me is the Jet Blue carried the indident live on board the plane via their Direct TV link - Many passengers felt they would have been calmer not knowing the details to their own drama - they cut the tv's on final a couple minutes out.
Bravo to the pilot and his crew - he probably grabbed a seat on the next flight to NY to pick up his flight from there today.

Re: Jet Blue plane has landing gear trouble
I spoke with a former boeing mechanic about the gear and it buckling under the stress, he said that it is very unlikely for the gear to fold under the weight of the plane regardless of its orientation. The gear has a mechanisim that locks it in place under weight. So as soon as the plane put some weight on the gear it locks down solid.

Re: Jet Blue plane has landing gear trouble
I read in the paper that Jet Blue has individual tv moniters and cable so travelers can watch what ever they want on a trip. They were watching themselves on CNN and hearing all the commetary on what "could" happen on touch down. Some people were crying, some calling loved ones, etc.
Scary stuff!

Re: Jet Blue plane has landing gear trouble
I think that for the most part pilots do very well under pressure. Like this emergency. I am also a professional pilot for a passenger airline. The few emergencies I have had were all gear malfunctions and when the landing really counted on a specific technique to land safely it turned out alot better than some of my other "normal" Landings. We have set procedures for all emergencies so there is no doubt as to what must be done. The only real fear would be if the wheel was not 90 degrees say only about 45 or so and did not blow out on touchdown then it would be difficult if not possible to keep it on the runway. In that situation I would rather land gear up and skid it on the runway at least that way it reduces if not eliminates the risk of a ground loop and your not fighting a turn off the runway.

Re: Jet Blue plane has landing gear trouble
Can you say "Alert Service Buletin" !
I guess the FAA won't be able to ignore this anymore.
A spring loaded centering device would be helpful ?
And lastly, BUY BOEING !.
