What do you think about while hunting?
When it's slow, you're in your tree stand or blind, time seems to almost stand still.
What do you think most about?
For me, it's my beautiful wife and 6 week old boy. God how I missed them!!! Wish I could have heard there voices for even five minutes while out there. Don't get me wrong, I love the solitude and time away, always have. Still, those times allow us the time to reflect on what's most important and what we all have to be so greatful for. I also daydreamed about the day when my boy can be out there with me. It can't come soon enough!

Re: What do you think about while hunting?
Interesting topic!
When I'm power hiking - going from point A to B as fast as possible- I usually end up with a song in my head to pass the time. When I'm going slow really hunting I usually keep my mind in a "hide and seek" mode. Especially when its super dry out your best chance of sneaking on something is the first time you see it so it pays to keep your head in the game, however you can do it.

Re: What do you think about while hunting?
if you're referring to those pain in the neck pine sqirrels, yes. They sit there and chatter till I throw something at them, then they go up into the tree and continue.

Re: What do you think about while hunting?
Im usually thinking of how I wasted 10 bucks flinging an arrow at that timber tiger! Just kidding, but I sure would like to at times.
I usually am thinking about how I can't wait to hear my broadhead whistling through the air seeking its target. On the way home, I think about the wife, I wonder what she is cooking for dinner.

Usually I'm thinking, "I bet the fish are really biting right now." Or "I should have brought the boat."

Re: What do you think about while hunting?
I'm with Waterdog.....several years ago I found myself often thinking about fishing while I was out hunting. Fretting over the prime fishing I was missing out on and concerned that there wasn't more time to do both. I finally decided that fishing was more important to me and haven't bought a hunting license since. Never regretted that choice.

Re: What do you think about while hunting?
Hoosier Daddy nailed it.
A one hour walk in the dark is just too far, down the canyon and back up the other side. And then the return trek in the Sahara sun. Ugh!

Re: What do you think about while hunting?
If I am sitting in blind I keep thinking was that an elk or.......BIGFOOT
If I am walking I try to figure out which tree they are hiding behind and how to get back. I guess if I had a GPS that would give me one less thing to think about....then I would go crazy.

Re: What do you think about while hunting?
I wonder how many doughballs are on this hill that will shoot me thinking I am a target because they shoot first then look later?
I wonder what it looks like over that next ridge, since most doughballs wont walk that far with their 2 axe handle wide rear ends.
I wonder how many people have ever walked clear over to this ridge from where I left the road. Just one more ridge and the odds of running into doughballs drops dramatically.
Nobody in their right mind would shoot a doe/cow in this hole so I guess if anybody else is here they must be a hunter.
I wonder if "Gus Orviston" and "Reel Handel" are still driving back and forth on the same mile of road with their arrows stuck out the window of the truck.
I wonder if I break my leg how long it will take for somebody to find me this far from the road.
I often wonder if I can get back to the truck before dark.
I also wonder if I just didnt go back, ....EVER, how long I could survive living in the woods with what I have.

Re: What do you think about while hunting?
Lord,
I promise not to ....... anymore, just put a big buck right in my scope and I will go home to my wife and 3 kids and spend the rest of the week with them.... Of course he can also hear your thoughts --- Actually , I will kill the 4 pt buck, fish the rest of the week and get my double buck --- a 4 pt buck with a 10 lb steelhead buck in between the antlers for a picture in the same day... When he hears my thoughts I am in trouble

Re: What do you think about while hunting?
When the weather is nice.... while listening and trying to decypher each sound and movement, I take in the beauty of it all. How much it puts you in the cycle instead of in the store.
When the weather isn't so nice.... mostly it's - well, at least I'm not at work.

Re: What do you think about while hunting?
Every minute I stay out here, the odds swing in my favor. Weeks of prparation, days of boredom can change to pure adrenaline in 2.5 seconds.
As Jenny might say "expect a bull to sneek in with every call".

Re: What do you think about while hunting?
Its a total adrenaline rush just jumping the things thats incentive enough to keep plugging away. Especially in the Cascades where you hunt a herd all day its nice knowing you "got them" one more time. At the end of the day when they have their tongues hanging out you know you won that round, even if you didnt get any shots.

Re: What do you think about while hunting?
Before sunrise...
why does it always seem to take so long to walk to your spot in the dark.
Boy I really need to loose weight.
what was that ...!?
only 15 more minutes until shooting time, please don't let them come early.
Once on stand...
Did I remember to load my gun?
I could really use a more comfortable chair.
Don't fall asleep.
What was that ...?!
Can I get my lunch out of my pack without scaring everything for a half mile?
Did that tree just move?!
Just before sunset....
Okay only 30 more minutes of light. Please don't let them come late.
What was that ...?!
I wonder what we're going to cook for dinner?
If I get a critter now can I still track it?
I bet the guys are already back at camp eating and sleeping.
What does the hike back to camp always seem so much shorter than the hike in?

Re: What do you think about while hunting?
All of the above at some time or another!
Since most of my time is spent still-hunting, most of my thoughts are "I wonder what lies just ahead". This is what keeps me motivated, believing there will be something there.
Hunting is one of the few times that I can stay focused on what I'm doing for extended periods of time.
Every hour I spend not seeing something brings me one hour closer to payday...

Re: What do you think about while hunting?
There has been more than one time that i'll nod off while it's slow. Especially when it's cool and foggy....lean up against a tree and catch some winks.
I also often think about how funny it was to hear Novice screaming when a hot buck was charging him....I should really try to keep my laughter to myself tho....scares too many critters off....

Re: What do you think about while hunting?
The nice thing about having this smoke pole in my hands is I don't have to wait for the Bite to turn on. Why do the rattlesnakes always look like the Rocks? Wish I would have spent more time getting in shape this hill goes on forever...Where the heck is an "easy biter" when you need one...

Re: What do you think about while hunting?
I think about that timber tiget that I hit with a rock in the paulina unit. I took an hour to get into a great spot and this little bugger came out and would not stop chirping... So, I picked up a rock figuring to scare it off and hit the little @#$%$#@... If I tried a million more times, I couldn't ever make that throw again...

All of what Bait O' Eggs said. I was in one of those break a leg spots the other day trying to get steeper and deeper. It paid off with a blown stock but, another lesson learned.
