Default A backyard mishap to a bird dog. Ouch!

Last winter i wrote the story of how i lost my Belle, (8 1\2 year old Brittny). It was a sad story and completely true .
Then this summer I wrote of a accident(with barbed wire) that happened to my new Brittny pup named Morgan.
Well here is another mishap .
Morgan is a long legged Britt. with short coat , an absolutly outstanding looking dog. She(Morgan ) hunts in the fields with me and has shown signs of becoming a real fine hunter.
Last Sat. evening i was sitting at the dinner table , we had just finished supper when i herd Morgan wince as she jumped off the one step deck out back. I walked out to see what was wrong and i couldnt believe my eyes.
She had a open wound about 12inches long ,starting by her front sholder on her chest and running all the way under her arm pit across her rib cage . The wound was bleading pretty bad and i rushed to the vet.
Come to find out ,,, Morgan spends all day at home hunting the squirels that live in our neighborhood. Fairly often the the squirel runs along the fence and Morgan will make a grand jump and try to snap the little critter from the fence.
This day she had jumped and landed on a Lilic bush stob. The stob went in thru the hide and then traveled along the ribs, hitting three ribs before exiting back by the stomach or paunch.
Easy come easy go ,,, three layers of muscle stitches, two drain tubes, and 750 $ dollars later Morgan is O.K.. Whow,,,, stuff like that you just cant plan on. So stupid and so costly.
The worst part was that Morgan had to miss the season opener Dove and Grouse ... id. painter

Oh man, sorry to hear about your pup. Sounds like she's going to be okay though, and I'm glad for that.

I swear if you try to hang onto a little money, something will jump up and take it anyway.

Take care of her - and yourself.

Check into pet insurance - it has saved me some bucks with all the Lab mishaps my pack 'o hounds get into. Pretty good coverage at $20/mo

We were traveling home for Christmas and aired the dogs near a Pheasant packed wildlife refuge. The dogs went crazy jumping birds along the gravel road. A few days later we noticed a large gash in the belly of Max the Lab and it was already starting to smell. Some sulfer and stitches and he was as good as new. He had chased a running bird through cover and smacked into a barbed wire fence.
Max was also the one that chose the short route over a 12 foot cliff to retrieve a Mallard along the Columbia. That left a mark too. He always had Pizzaz!

Two days ago I was working on a duckblind and had finished everything except digging out some better foot steps down a steep embankment to the pond below. I was using a heavy chisel-bit spud bar 7' long and weighing 30-40 lbs. I was dropping the bit into the dirt and Waldo, my lab pup, was chasing the dirt clods down the hill. Then, he came up behind me and just as I dropped the spud he stuck his left front paw forward into the digging...and I nailed his paw dead center. A little more force and it could have been chopped off. His paw was definitely bent the wrong way...I figured most or all of the bones were broken.

At the vet an x-ray revealed only one broken bone, a metacarpal, and it was one of the interior ones...so the vet didn't even splint or cast it...said it will heal fine as is. He gave me a bottle of pain pills and a bill for $179. He said the pills were for the dog...but after paying the bill I am the one with the lingering pain. :depressed:

Seriously, it could have been a lot worse...Waldo's paw will heal up fast and he won't miss any hunting time this fall.

Here's the newly renovated blind:

There's an old river channel that runs past the blind...I mowed an area (you can just see the edge) of the bottom so decoys can be used when the water is only inches deep in early season.

Sorry for your luck IDP or should I say your dogs?
Anyway, hang in there. At least you can still fire up the boat and go fishng.
Is there any water in American falls?
I used to like trolling on the Sterling side in gront of the white rock cliff.

Thanks for the reply G.S.A.. It sound slike waldo is very lucky to have all his toes.
Mr. fisherman, It sounds like we need to get together for some story telling. The last few years the water has been drawn down to4% on American Falls and it is really hurting the fishing. This summer we had trouble getting any of the nice big trout it is known for. I talked with a Fish and Game Biol. he mentioned that the fish were really taking it in the shorts . Everyone gets the water before the fish.
Keep thinking British Columbia. id. painter
