Default Proud papa

I opened the upland season yesterday with my chocolate lab Moxie. This is her first hunting season, but she has all the instincts, breeding and disposition to be a great hunter. Lord knows her training hasn't been anything special.

The record will reflect that her first retrieve was a **** mountain quail, followed later in the afternoon by a limit of ruffed grouse.

She did a great job of busting the quail out of the manzanita and salal, and showed no hesitation no matter how thick the brush or how steep the slope. She has a great tender mouth and a motor that won't quit.

I'm so proud...I just had to share.

I know how you feel. I still have a picture on my desk of my pup's first retrieve. It's right here by my wife's picture.... uh, well, her picture is around here somewhere, I'm sure.

Congrats! May you have many, many hunts together.

C-lice-
I was in the same situation last season. Pup was 4 months old last October and ended her first season really well with quite a few birds. My favorite was her first encounter with waterfowl. I jumped shot 3 canadians on a pond. Threw a rock out on the pond to show her what was lying out there. She dove in and retrieved all of them. I was a proud father! Now she's started this season gangbusters.

Pretty neat seeing the genetics (and training) come out so early in their life hunting.

I live outside of Canyonville. Hunt mostly the South. What general area are you hunting?
