Default Back-Country Express (meatless pic)

Well,

We've been finding lots of very out of the way places with little or no hunting pressure and a few elk...but so far, no antlers (except sheds)

It was nice to get the stock out for a ride into the wild woods this weekend

This weekend's report: overshot another buck, saw one elk, one fresh rub, lots of older sign, getting ready for the rut. Gettin the kinks out of the legs and the calls sound good.

PS My buddy Keith got a bull Thursday evening. 3 pt, while hunting alone in the Cascades, WTG Keith.

I'm prepping to head to AZ.

Reports?

Hunted out of Madras about 30 or so miles and saw a ton of deer (50 or so doe 6 bucks) had opportunites on 2 smaller forkys but opted to pass, considering I have a week in late Sept. in the Snake R. unit. Today on the way out in a totally unsuspecting place my brother jumped 30 cow with 1 5x5 he was within 60 yds the bull was behind a bush and decided to bolt when he tried to get a better look. We left all our calls back at the trucks because we never see elk where we were hunting (well never do that again). I took a shot on a coyote at 60 yds but was a little behind him and he jumped the shot! Awsome weekend!

Hey GRB, Nice looking a__! The horse makes we want to go to the Eagle Caps for two weeks. This rain really gives me the urge to get out there, wish I had bought my tags.

Good luck on the dream hunt. Sounds like you better figure the yardage, then take 10 off. I have just the opposite problem usually. :depressed:

Take Care

I hunted the cascades near the B&B fire. Went to a spot I have never not jumped elk and we got skunked. After sitting over a walo for an hour calling we slid down into the walo to only find a dry dust hole I have never seen this walo dry and I guess that might have something to do with no elk.

Next weekend I head back to the Ochoccos and get to stay 9 days.

Took a pic of the B&B fire on Saturday, that is 3 finger jack on the right. The fire is almost to Santian lake it looks like as Santiam is about right below the peak of Jack in this picture. The short dark flat top peak in the middle is near Duffy Lake which appears to probably now have a black shore line :depressed: I heard it burned clear to the edge of Marion Lake. When it got dark we could see several trees crowning out. This rain will really help the firefighters. I am not sure what the firefighters were doing, but there were several people sitting in trucks at the end of the road making sure nobody drove in the direction of the fire.

Round 2.....

OK so the result was the same as round one so thats not a good thing. I took my dad and a couple other buddies to the cascades out of Oakridge. Apparantly I was a week late! We found 3 gut piles from kills that looked anywhere from 1-7 days old. Looked like a big bunch of hunters got in on a really big bunch of elk and laid it to them. What a weird feeling - walking through your "honey hole" patch of woods and stumbling on someone else's kill. There were guys really hitting the brush and staying on one area so I'm sure it was them that did the damage. Nothing like being a few days late to a party right? We worked them over pretty good saturday too but no shots. Saturday I almost got an arrow off at a small 4 point bull in a reprod, and that was as good as it got for me. Today it rained quie a bit but I never got back on them.

This coming weekend I'll leave for Ukiah for 9 more days of frustration...cant wait!
