Default Help a Youth hunter? (Wht Rvr/Northside)

OK, every year my father, my brother (16) and myself put in for our controlled hunts as a party. As of yet, I'm the only one who has taken any game. I'm currently in the process of applying to dental school, and it looks like I may not be in the state for the next 4 years while I'm at school. So this year, we applied for hunts we were sure to get so we could hunt big game one last time before I head off for school. We drew for White River buck deer and Northside cow elk.

I'm wondering if anyone out there can help me out here. Does anyone have any land or know of anyone in these areas that could spare one buck or one cow elk? After my brother takes his, we will head to public land and try our luck there, all I really care about is being there for my bro's first big game animal so I'm trying to give him the best shot I can.

We don't apply for the youth hunts, because my bro doesn't want to, he wants to hunt WITH us, not just us with him. I guess I am feeling a little guilty for always being the guy that's been in the right place at the right time, but now it's his turn to be that guy. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It's a cow elk tag for the whole Northside Unit. #247, Nov. 22-30.

There's a ranch that let's people on there property with a key system. I believe you need to get on there list to get a key. It seems to me I've seen there name and number on here somewhere. Try a search for the Northside unit and see what comes up on it. Im sure that late in the season if there's any weather at all, there will be some animals on it.

If that fails you, try and get ahold the the biologist out of John Day and he will give you some good insight on where to start looking for them. He probably also has the name and number of the ranch.

I have hunted East Northside alot. I prefer the small road closure area its like 9 square miles. Its great because the area is completely surrounded by a road. So for 1st timers they can't get lost! Any direction out they will hit a road. We usually hunt Jona's Mt. Hope this helps..

I have hunted deer east of long creek for the past 30 years, just north of county 18 up Hog Creek , and Slide Creek and Kenny Point area I have seen elk in these areas, sometime several per year and at other times very few.
Good luck.

Thanks a lot for the responses. I'll be heading over there to do some scouting, but I'll only have one weekend, so this really helps with making my time productive while I'm there by giving me some places to start. Thanks again.
