Anyone been in the High Lakes lately?
Headed up to the High Cascade lakes in two weeks and wondering if anyone has fished East, Hosmer, Lava, Crane, etc. lately? Fishing from tubes. Any tips or thoughts are appreciated.
Thanks,& keep 'em tight.

I have heard that it is getting cold and windy up there. Be aware, especially in tubes. Have fun and follow up w/ a report.

ripnlips:
Fished Lava 9/10 & 11. Lots of action, and fish in the 17" to 19" range are the norm. Green wollybugger is the ticket fished along the shore edge in 8' to 12' depth. Float tube should be perfect. Slow short strips will entice these great fighting trout.

Re: Anyone been in the High Lakes lately?
Fished Hosmer 9/16 afternoon. Yep getting downright chilly and the sideways rain was kinda miserable. Managed 1 small atlantic and saw only 1 other caught. Reports from the launch is it was better the day before.
East on 9/17 produced better results on callibaetis. Atlantics, rainbows and a couple of reel screaming browns.

Re: Anyone been in the High Lakes lately?
Fished Hosmer 9/16 - 9/17. It was 40f at bedtime on Saturday, maybe 25f on Sunday morning, and maybe 70f by Sunday afternoon. Definitely fall at the high lakes.
There was a nice hatch of caddis at dusk on Saturday. Lots of rising fish. I got a lot of short strikes and one hookup that made it to the net.
The birds included ring-neck ducks, a pair of sora, a family of pied-bill grebes, various blackbirds and a pair of juvenile bald eagles doing aerobatics.

This time of year in particular the fish like a little action on the caddis. Tie the a little bushier and skate them on the surface by twitching them in. The atlantics will hammer them.
I've always done well this time of year for atlantics at Hosmer by stripping a red or white wolly bugger on an intermediate sink line. Let it sink a bit and strip as fast as you physically can. I've seen guys clamp the rod under their arm so that they can strip with both hands. It either red on overcast days and white on sunny days or exactly the opposite. I can never remember until I get up there and start fishing! Sucks getting old!
East and Lava should be fishing great! Bring your long johns!

TheCamel...What side of the lake were you fishing? We've had some luck on the south side and haven't had the energy requires to go to the west side where all the reeds are. Looks like a long way back to shore.
Thanks.

Re: Anyone been in the High Lakes lately?
TwoFister...I had great luck at Hosmer one year using an orange wooly bugger. And like you said, they really like them stripped fast. Just hammer them. That year, I got a 22 inch Atlantic. My biggest Atlantic to date. What size caddis you fishing? Thanks, Mike

Re: Anyone been in the High Lakes lately?
South end from the campground boat launch to where the reeds end past the Lava Lake Lodge. West side can be good also, but it is a long kick in a float tube. I oar'd and kicked from the campground to the northeast corner along the shoreline in my toon while fishing and that was a lot of effort! Let us know how your trip turns out. Sent you a PM with a link to an online map. Tight lines
