Who is bow hunting this weekend? and where?
Anybody going to make it out for the opening weekend of bowhunting?
I would sure like to have a season that wasnt 100 degrees each day (east) :depressed: , a little rain so every step didnt did sound like milk on a bowl of Rice Crispies, (snap, crackle, pop ), you could actually have a campfire in the evenings
I will be in the Ochoccos, hunting the same ground we hunt each year. I would love to hear a bugle at first light that wasnt another hunter
With the price of fuel, hunting will cost more this year than normal

Re: Who is bow hunting this weekend? and where?
I'll be out there with a crew. I have around 40 head spotted with two nice bulls in the bunch ready for saturday. I'm not shooting anything due to my pack in trip at the end of the year, but some blood should be spilled by opening weekend by someone in the group.
I just found out that in the area I was packing into just got torched by the fire in Hells Canyon. To say the least I'm not a happy camper right now. So maybe one of those bulls might die.

The first weekend in the coast range trying to thin out the herd I've chased the last two years. Hopefully out east in the Ukiah unit a week later.
Good luck.

Oh I have my secrets, tc. Lets just say its between you and I, but much closer to you than me. Its a great spot but I dont know if I'll get a chance to hunt it or not. Maybe I'll just end it this weekend and try and call a big one or two later in the year for my old man.

Re: Who is bow hunting this weekend? and where?
BOE, since my first week of season is botched due to meeings w/work, (I typically chase desert muleys opening week west of Burns), I'm thinking of spending the last week or so up in the Ochoco's, somewhere due east of Piscah. Hopefully find some romantic bulls. Last few times I've been there, there's been little sign of the rut. (I've heard stories of bulls bugling in November!)
I don't know the area very well at all. Just blindly stopped (I think my back hurt from the rough road) and dropped into a canyon. Always seemed to be elk there, so I never ventured anywhere else.

Re: Who is bow hunting this weekend? and where?
Put me in for elk at Ukiah..I'll be one of those hardcore types chasing them under your treestands!
I'll start there and end there with 12 days of hunting, in between it will be the cascades or the coast range.

Re: Who is bow hunting this weekend? and where?
Coast Range eh nitrobass, where do you intend on doing that at?? Looks like the woods are going to be open this year for once down here. That should be a change. Don't have to hide under rocks looking for security while looking at elk. It's gonna be nice.

Re: Who is bow hunting this weekend? and where?
Going up aroung the sisters area for bucks and bulls my eldest brother isnt going on the trip in late Sept. so were trying to fill his tags this long weekend. Tailchaser Its to bad about the fires I hope it didnt totally ruin your trip. Ive been tracking the fires on the usfs web site and it seems that there are still alot of areas up on top to hunt in between all the fires. Maybe it will concentrate them more and make for better hunting or maybe im just be to optimistic what do you think.

Re: Who is bow hunting this weekend? and where?
Opening weekend I will be working, but I hope to sneak out Saturday afternoon somewhere around Newport. I did get lucky and got 7 days of the 5-12 and will be headed to the Cascades around Sweethome to sit the treesands and do some calling.

Re: Who is bow hunting this weekend? and where?
I will be hunting CLOSE to home, there is a very large buck(four point) that has been eating my roses and he even snuck into the garden the other day and ate all of our beans! I hope he is nice and fat!
Good luck this weekend, hope to hear lots of good stories.

Re: Who is bow hunting this weekend? and where?
Hey tailout, my luck changed for once. The fire actually missed our hunting area by about 4 miles! So I'm back in the game. I was a nervous cat to say the least for a couple of days. It looks like they pretty much have it under control so we're good to go once again. If only those bulls were so lucky.

Re: Who is bow hunting this weekend? and where?
Last trip out I was very pleased with how the bow was performing.
Tonight it was different
I was all over the foam target at 20 yards
I was about 3 for 4 hitting the foam target at 30 yards
Spent quite a bit of time looking for arrows in the grass at 40 yards
Yup, I am ready to go hunting
Actually I was thumping them right in there up to 50 yards, but usually something fails on my last time out before season, and I go into a panic. Packing tomorrow, heading out friday. Hope we are not successful, I got a weeks vacation to enjoy with a tag later in the season. But there are bulls that need the fat ran off them for the rifle hunters later in the year, so off we go

I'll be at my folks house near Sunriver. They have a cougar in the neighborhood! Hmmm...
And then it's 11 days in NE on the 12th. I've got two branch bulls tied up to trees.

Re: Who is bow hunting this weekend? and where?
BOE,
Were you shooting broadheads, and if you were, did you remove them since your last shooting of them? I was just curious, because I usually tune my broadheads, match them to shafts they fly best on, then store them with the broadhead on. They usually shoot great after the initial run. I have found some shaft-broadhead combos that just will not fly true, so they get a fieldpoint if lucky, if not, the trash.
Good luck!

Re: Who is bow hunting this weekend? and where?
OSO - I was actually joking with the shooting results. (thought I made that clear )
It just usually seems I get the bow shooting great and right before season things start going wrong, and I panic. No problems last night, so I left on a good round and have some confidence in that first shot.

Re: Who is bow hunting this weekend? and where?
Sorry I missed that last little bit, I thought it was part of your signature
I was feeling pain for you, because 2 years ago my rest disassembled the weekend before a trip to Oregon from Montana. Glad to see its all good though. I packed my gear away for the trip, and it was shooting well when it went into the case, hope it does when I take it out!

Re: Who is bow hunting this weekend? and where?
BOE, I was just going to say,,watch out for Denny, he might just show up to bugle you in. Then I get this email.
Here is Reel Handel last email to me...
Dennis, I hear Roy is hunting that Zipperlip place again this year. I think I will run up there and set up in the AM, and bugle him in a few times. Get him to cross the canyon a few times, and he will be spent.
Muhahahahaha,
Denny aka Reel Handel
P.S. I could use any call I want, BOE can't tell the difference between a Holstein and a Bull Elk bugle.
Good luck!!

Re: Who is bow hunting this weekend? and where?
I have heard Denny bugle ...at least that is what he called it We thought he had some bad dinner the night before with the sounds he was eminating
I doubt he could call in a buzzard to a gut pile.
I would enjoy slashing his tires if I find his truck parked along the road Not that he would notice when he got back to the truck anyway
I told him where we were camping in an email last night to him. Maybe he will come cook up a meal for us. It would probably be in a gold can and on ice, but it could be called a meal.
I might have to go to Fort Rock and see if I can get the old man off the shoulder of the road with some distant bugling.

Re: Who is bow hunting this weekend? and where?
I'll be out in the coast range near Home (Vernonia). Did a quick power scout this afternoon. Found two new fresh rubs that weren't there last week one looked pretty small, spike maybe, and the other was huge. and poop so fresh it was still gooey. That's fresh in this weather. I so excited I don't think I'll sleep tonight.
I have a friend in North Idaho (Orofino) who's father owns Clearwater archery, the makers of the power mag bow...When he can't sleep he drives the roads pulling over every few miles and bugling.. When he gets a reply he pulls the truck over goes to sleep till daylight then gets after him....it's been a very successfull method for him!
good luck all
