Default Starkey unit info.

I will be bow hunting the Starkey unit the last 9 days of the season unless I get lucky and fill my elk tag early on the coast. I made a power scouting trip this weekend and was fairly happy with what I found, except for the large amount of free range cattle in the area. I would say that 80% of the waterholes I found were dominated by moo cows. I am new to this unit and could use any info. someone could provide. No Honey holes expected, just general info. on the elk habits such as, where they might be located (high pop.) towards the end of the season, If they are vocal etc. I have heard that they are call shy. If anyone has any info. please let me know!

Thank you,
MARK

Ive hunted it around the Ladd Canyon area with a rifle usually late in the second season years ago when there were no restrictions on bulls, we saw lots of animals in that area and had a fair amount of success on small bulls.

Check out the road closure areas just behind Park Saddle, in the limber Jim area. This area buts up to private land and always holds Elk. The country is great for archery.
Camping is plentiful, and there is water at Park Saddle...and further down if the roads are open. A mountain bike will get you very secluded on the road closures. Other landmarks in the area include Watermelon Canyon, Big Beaver, Little Beaver, Dry Beaver, and Elk Wallow. There are also tons of Elk in the Park Saddle "Bowl", which is easy access from the main road, follow the fence line and hunt!
I have hunted lost of the Starkey Unit, this being my favorite.
Good luck,
Troy

I went there opening weekend. We didn't see very many elk and they were call shy. Opening day we ran into 4 and followed them and got into like 25 elk and a couple bulls. The rest were cows and calves. Then the 2nd day we got 35 yards away from 7. Then saw 10 or 15 more cross the fence. We saw tons of deer. Many of them were bucks too. My dads friend Larry shot one and knocked it down but we never found it. There were also people on 4wheelers running around every where. That sucked! They ruined like 3 of hunts at least. We hunted right next to pilcher creek resivoir. If you go there hunt in the refuge thats where we saw all the elk. And theres a ditch alongside the road that was very productive for deer. It was cool other than the 4wheelers.
