I have been hunting that 250x hunt for many years and at last, this year I did not draw the tag. I have taken 4 large bulls and 1 spike including a huge 6x6 that is now on my wall. I hunt off the 5505 road. Just below the town of Dale is the turn off(appx. 1 mi.)follow the signs to Olive lake and anywhere within 10 miles of the lake is awsome hunting area. This will require some fairly steep hiking but well worth it. Hope this helps and good luck!!!
E-mail me for more info and my ph# if you want to hunt this area

We've got into animals around the wilderness area above the John Day R. We didnt have pack animals but if you do I say thats the place to be. What we did the first day was head into the Wilderness area before light on the first morning and wait for animals to be pushed our way. We didnt score any bulls on either of my 2 trips in there but I can't say we didnt have our chances. Theres always some people packed in the Wilderness area but not too many where we were hunting. We saw several big bulls heading into the wilderness but never got one off at em.

Ill see if I can find my old maps and give you some more specifics to roads and such. I dont hunt in there anymore so...

Its pretty thick country in there and we've never really got into alot of animals but always enough to keep it interesting. Some big bulls and some huge bucks hangin around that country.

A buck tag in there would be a hoot. When I go down to Annies in Ukiah while hunting Heppner I see some HUGE bucks comeing out of Desolation.

I hunted there last year for bulls (rifle.) It was a terrible year due to the weather. Hot, moon, etc. I like the advice your getting. Try the 1010 road. It makes a loop off of the 10 road. There is a trail that goes to cougar something or other. It looks great. Pray for weather.

I have a buddy that is backpacking into the wilderness over in the minam area. Do you have any tips or locals for him? He is going bowhunting in a couple of weeks. What access point would you recommend for a backpacker?

Thanks in advance,

MarlinMark

I'll send ya an email on the Minam,,one thang is the big minam isa pack for just packpackin probaby 17 miles easy or 14 miles steep to 8000' back to 4000'... or 10 mile an alot of other hunters an steep an rugid country, that aside,,,the easyest pack would Moss Springs,,an Go UP the lil Mimam great area with bogs..if determaned to go the the big minam.Remember the closer to reds horse camp the more people,,if ya go there say howdy ta Odis he runs the place..an shorter pack is out by fanny Mnt the trail head to boulder creek again steep...an more prospect of people..but boulder creek holds elk an huge deer!......Good luck an let me know how he does...an Hows he plan to get an elk out there without it spoilin??...
