Default NEED ARCHERY HELP!

Dusted off the old bow this season, got some new arrows, 110gr. bullet points, getting groups so tight from 20yds. that I'm shooting my knocks off.

I try to shoot some broadheads and my arrows are all over the target (14-16" groups) and the arrows are cork screwing from the bow to the target, and some dipping down to the bottom of the target. no consistancy at all.

I archery hunted from 84' to 97' and have never had such problems. I tried two different 125 gr. broadhead with the same results.

My knock and rest are tuned?? at least when I shoot practice arrows.

any suggestions???

thanks

take this season off and look forward to next.

shooting field tips at 20 yards really doesn't tell much in my opinion. But if you havn't shot your bow for awhile, take it in and have it "tuned up". Most broadheads need to be tuned. I find very few that will shoot well with just screwing them in.

Martin's archery web site has a really nice procedure for tuning your bow for broadheads. I would still take it in and have a profession help you out though. Martin's archery

Set up a paper tuner in 3-4ft front of your target and see if you can shoot bullet holes through it.(just your fletchings will be noticeable.) If you see any tear one way or another your rest is not tuned. With that much difference in your groups your bow is either out of tune or your form is not good, or consistent.

It would be good to know if you shoot fingers or release, weight of bow, arrows, and length. Without knowing those, here goes...

First look at your rest. Do this by nocking an arrow then hold the bow so you are looking at the string and it is exactly over the middle of your handle. In that position, the arrow tip should be hiding behind the string.

While you're here, look at a side view of the arrow. Make sure your arrow is ever so slightly pointed down from perpendicular to your string. Move the nock point until it is. Don't try to move the nock point without nock pliers.

Next tune your broadheads. Get a piece of 2x4 or 4x4 and 4 smooth nails. Drive two nails in at opposing angles so it forms an X. Repeat about 18 inches down the board. Put the arrow on the top of the X's. Gently roll the arrow back and forth to see if it is true. Next, with your broadhead attached, grab a spray can or pop bottle to put in front of the broadhead as you roll the arrow in the stand. The can will act as a reference to see if the BH wobbles. If it does (more than a 1/16"), grab a torch or lighter and heat the arrow where your insert is to loosen the glue (not too hot!!). With a towel, give the BH at least one complete turn and while you're at it align the blades with your flecthings. Check the wobble and repeat if necessary.

For me, this usually does it. There are some other things to check for if you shoot a release. So if the above doesn't fix it and you shoot a release, I'll go further.

Let us know the results.

OK...release (ultra nok xl), 70lbs, 2219 arrow, 27.5 in. long(overdraw)

Arrow very slightly angling down...check

If I'm looking at the string and tip correctly as you described, the tip is a hair to the left of the string when the string is centered over the handle.. I'll fix that

I think this is a broadhead tuning problem.

This bow shoots practice arrows like a gun.. 2"groups at 20, 4" at 30, and 6"at 40 yrd.

I'll try tuning the broadheads tomorrow and let ya know how it went.

for the record..the bow was tuned and string replaced last year at Archers Afield. I have shot regularly but not often since 97' My old arrows and broadheads that I replaced this year were new in 1991! they flew great right out of the box back then so I assumed the new ones would too?

thank you I appreciate all the help!

May be looking to buy a new bow, loose the overdraw, and switch to cabon arrows in December, any suggestions? The high country carbon light looks and feels pretty nice.

Are the 2219's the right arrow for shooting 70 lbs, and the rest of your setup?

Some broad heads just shoot better then others, what I mean by this is the weight is distributed differently on different heads. Some of the wider heads plane more. I line the vains up the the blades, also spin test each arrow and if there is any wobble this is not good. If you are using a head that is to heavy you may have to go down a weight. I have been able to get almost ever arrow to shoot good this way. It sounds like your arrow is spined ok unless the head is to heavy.

Now there is alays the guy in camp that has the new bow and has never shot a broad head, and he tells us that they shoot the same, right? We all laugh and tell him to shoot one and of corse he pinwheels the target out to 40 yards.

I still don't know why my hunting partner tells me to get away from him when I come to tell him I got a elk down. Maybe it is the fact that he already heard the crash of the elk falling.

Every year when I first start shooting again I see something in the arrow flight that makes me want to tweek my bow. Then I remember how sweet everything was working last season.

I think a person needs to shoot 50-100 arrows a night for a week or two to get your body, anchor point...basically your form back on track. Then "Line Shoot" your bow to check the tune. Last thing is tuning broadheads.

Broadheads are way less forgiving for hand torque, palming and other bad habits. Do the ground work first.

There are not to many things as flustrating as trying to tune a bow. :depressed:

Get the field point shooting good and the broadheads are all over the place. Adjust the rest and the knock needs moved, which then means the sight needs adjusted, and then you realize your slide is not coming all the way back and your bus stings are bent at full draw so you adjust that and then your rubber bumper for the release bust off and you have to get the string taken off to add 3 more and in the process it loses 4 twist and is now too long for your draw length, so you get the draw lenngth adjusted and you realize your rest has moved on you so you start all over again.

Not that I have ever shot a bow or anything in the past.

Just got back from the range and from yesterday to today the arrows decided to land 4 inches to the right Tomorrow they will be left or up or down or .....

like others have posted try to paper tune it or just bring it to kutch archery and have kenny tune it for. he is really cheap and very trust worthy ( he's an independate SMALL buisness) so he values his customers. As for new carbons i really like the goldtip hunters, in one dozen arrows there is only a 6 grain differance from the lightest to the heaviest, and for a new bow whatever feels best to you. good luck with the problem, not much longer!!!

I like Gun Rod Bows addvice, I know that when I first get my bow out that I have to remember all the details of shooting good. The one that seems to get me is holding the bow in the same position after the arrow is released. I always want to pull it to the side to peak as the arrow is released. I alway get two patterns untill I improve my form.
I know that some people crank the bow down when it is going to be stored a while. I don't think this is necessary if you have the newer high teck bow strings. If you do want to take the pressure off the string and keep the bow the same use a T stringer when the bow is to be stored.

gobbaworms-

I don't know if you like cold beer or make it to vernonia much but I owe you one!

4 out of 5 broadheads turned beautifully on the jig with no adjustment, the other one took a little tweaking.

I made the slightest adjustment to the rest so my arrow tip was lined up with the string.

My broadhead groups are as tight as my field tip groups!!!!

thanks Gobba, and thanks to all who piped up with info.

Now if Bartlets would just get my kicker fixed life would be perfect.

fishlis--where is Kutch archery? Is that the guy in Yamhill?

You are more than welcome. I love cold beer--now if I can make it out to Vernonia...

Good luck this year, and who knows, maybe we'll run into each other in the field, on the water, or at the archery range at Washington Park.

In any case, I'm glad it helped.

I shoot a longbow...the only tuning I need to do is to occasionally tighten my string.
