Nehalem River
I recently moved to Oregon Coast. Last fall I drove up the Nehalem River below the hatchery, and then up the right fork and saw several nice Salmon caught. I would like to try bank fishing, but not sure of what would work on the upper Nehalem, best time of the year, what different runs come through, how to rig, and how best to fish the stream. Any tips and help would be for every appreciated.
Thanks

Re: Nehalem River
your best bet is to bobberfish. anywhere there is a pullout on the main stem of the nehalem there is a hole worth trying. Good luck

Re: Nehalem River
Silverslinger and Mofish both have good advice. The Nehalem is like all the north coast rivers. Totally different from the rest and fished different. Dont get me wrong any method can work but each river has its tricks and traditional hot spots and proven methods. When i first moved to Oregon 15 years ago i had a neighbor that ate and breathed salmon fishing, he had the Nehalem diled. He took me under his wing and turned a die hard hunter into a die hard fisher.I have had the time of my life since fishing the north chttp://www.ifish.net/gallery/showgallery.php?cat=500&ppuser=3892oast including the Nehalem. I was raised fishing warm water fish and with out his teaching i probably would have given up on Salmon by now. 1 good guided trip or a few trips with an experienced Salmon fisher will put you on the road. You'll figure out the rest. The nehalem has some great fishing. Here's a pick from last Saturday. Re: Nehalem River
Once the rain raises the river, there will be fish throughout the river. Then it lasts into November.

At least somebody is catching fish!! Nice buck, YaHoeeFishOn.
Troutcarver: The Swigler taught showed me the ways of the salamander and I've been hooked ever since. I'm still learning myself, but God I love the practice!!!!!

Re: Nehalem River
Your best bet is to use some good eggs under a float but if eggs are hard to come by don't forget about jigs.
My first time fishing there a few years back my wife and I landed two chromers in less then 10-minutes using a plain bead pink & white jig.
Proof is in the picture:
This is my wife, Cindy with a 30-pound summer chinook taken on the lower Nehalem in late August on a nice sunny day.
