Cougar and Bear hunting during deer/elk seaso

So the regs say that you have to have a deer or elk tag to carry a rifle during season. SO you basically have to have a deer tag to hunt bear and cougar during season. So if I go hunting this year for 4 days camping with 4 guys and I shoot a deer during the first 15 minutes of the trip then I have to put my gun away? Or can I still hunt for cougar and bear? Does the tag have to be unused? If I have a tagged deer hanging back at camp then I think that should count.

Why not say that you can't hunt for deer without a bear and cougar tag? Same kind of thing.

Just re read the regs. They say valid unused tag. But maybe that will change along with the side arm for archers law.

AFAIK the regs say that in order to carry a centerfire rifle in CERTAIN units during CERTAIN elk seasons, even if one has an unused bear/cougar tag, one must also have an elk tag for that unit.

I guess it only relates to certain units. Here is the quote from the regs.

"Q. Can I hunt bear or cougar during deer or elk seasons? A. You cannot hunt any species with a cen- terfire or muzzleloading rifle without a valid, unused deer or elk tag for that time period and area on your person during: Eastern Oregon controlled buck deer centerfire firearm season, Cascade bull elk season, coast bull elk seasons, Rocky Mt bull or either-sex elk seasons, or standard Rocky Mt antlerless elk centerfire firearm seasons (Nov. 22-Nov. 30). This does not include con- trolled W High Cascade (119A) or Hood- White Rvr (141A) buck hunts. (see page 12
for exceptions). You may use a shotgun, handgun, or bow during bear and cougar seasons."

This may all change with the order to remove all weapon carrying restrictions. It will be a nightmare for the patrol, but at least we could utilize our whole vacation if we harvest a deer or elk early.

In last Thursdays Oregonian 8-14-03, in the sports section, there was an article that stated that you can now cary a rifle in a big game hunt after you have filled your tag.
