Re: Hunting Reports Week 1/17 - 1/23
Hehe, well it looks like things are "falling together" (as opposed to "apart"...where they HAVE been most of the season!) in the last couple of weeks!
My friend and understudy, Kevin, and I went out to the east side of Sauvie on Thursday and got a half way decent pick...went there and set up in THICK fog.
A little gentle coaxing on the call and the dekes set jest right after a couple of tries, and viola 2 Limits 12 Mallards and 2 Sprig!
You can see those pics here

http://community.webshots.com/photo/...11967421nnCtOP
And then, today, my friend Mark and his son Andy from Hillsboro and I decided to make the long trek over to Boardman, where another friend had been wacking geese pretty good. This morning's hunt started off pretty slow being NOT cold enough and with too much visibility (from what it had been in the past couple of weekends), and it looked like we were setup for the big Strike Out!
Then things took a turn for the better and I managed to call in a nice big flock of Honkers and a another pair, a huge Honker and a Cackler together...dumped both of them, so that made our geese total 6 and I managed to scratch down an errant drake Mallard passing overhead in range of "The Bazooka", my trusty 10 ga. You can see some pics from today's hunt here...

Hunted Tillamook Bay today. Myself, Get Bit, MikeT and garyo. Kind of slow but saw more birds than I thought we would.
Rauly is thinking "I can't believe you actually shot this thing and made me retrieve it"
Get Bit and Rauly's friend Maddie

Heard more shooting on SI today than the whole season combined. Somebody had to get some ducks.

Re: Hunting Reports Week 1/17 - 1/23
Saturday hunting the coast, 5 guys hunting, quite a few blue bills, some bufflehead, and one mallard hen. Sunday, 3 guys hunting, 3 limits of blue bills, and 3 bufflehead. Tons of bluebills where we were hunting, great pass shooting when boats kick them up. Also tons of coots if you shoot coots....

Re: Hunting Reports Week 1/17 - 1/23
Even though we hunted on the 16th, it's worth posting this report this week. Last Friday, Team Cast and Blast (Skahorse, Boatdog and yours truly) hunted privat property near Clatskanie. It was a little slow, but we managed two greenheads and a widgeon. The highpoint of the whole trip was that Boatdog bagged his first bird ever. Congrats BD! Now your wife will hate me from this day forward!
Here's the team with mascot. From left to right, me, Skahorse, Boatdog. (Maggie in front - trying to figure out what these stooges were doing with her birds)
Here's BD proudly displaying his first greenhead.
Now, in this next photo, we had to depict a minor situation that transpired. I managed to bag a double while jumping a flock off of an irrigation canal. I was hoping that they would land on my side of the ditch, but, unfortunately, they landed in the canal. The canal was lined with blackberries - 8' high and too dense to send the dog through. So a little later we had drove to a different location - about 1/4 mile opposite the side of the canal from which I shot. We drove to the end of the road and were able to see the field near where the birds were down.
Since my dog will only take a line out to about 75 to 100 yards, I had to come up with plan B. Skahorse, the youngest and more ambitious member of the team, was wagging his tail with his tongue hanging out, as if to say, "I'll get it, boss." So, I put him at heel and gave him a line. He shot off like the young buck he is - through the thickets and briers and headed toward the downed birds. He came upon a fence, and howled back at me (via electronic cellular assistance) and asked how to ID an electric fence. "Is is buzzing?" I asked - Nope! Ok, then - just be careful (we team mates look out for each other). So he lifted one wire to let his pup under the fence....in doing so, he also touched the wire above....ummmmm, yup electric and powered up! Being a determined retriever, he didn't miss a step - he jumped the fence and stayed on the line despite the jolt. He continued accross a grassy field and grabbed up both birds in one retrieve! He even delivered to hand! As a reward I let him keep the birds. Nice retrieve Skahorse!
Once again, Skahorse and Boatdog, a great trip! I really enjoyed hunting with you guys. I hope Big Guy will see more of us in the future!
This was the second trip for Team Cast and Blast. Stay tuned for more adventures....and I'm sure there will be more.

Too funny...
Ska...you better get that brown dog up and running before you end up riding the kennel instead of the cab.

LI - Are you kidding? The dog already runs our house! If he could drive, I would be in the kennel!
Skein - Too Funny!
"Don't look like that"? What is that supposed to mean? I don't know, I thought I looked pretty good, seeing as I'm the only retriever I've ever seen wearing sunglasses!

Rauly,
Good job man!
That is the sweetest bird hunt pic I've seen this year!
I love the pink toe warmers, they're "IN".
Man, if only they made a shotgun that big for me!
Looks like a great hunt! Thanks for sharing!

Re: Hunting Reports Week 1/17 - 1/23
Went out this morning with MikeT and my daughter. The Teal and Wood Ducks were flying good in the fog. Almost no circling they would just drop in.
This is from yesterday afternoons hunt.
