Nehalem Bay
Was wondering if anybody had any reports from the bay, going to fish it tomorrow, hoping some of this rain gets those fish on the bite. Any info would be great.
Thanks

Re: Nehalem Bay
Hey,
Was down in the Nehalem Bay last week and we anchored just downstream from the docks in Wheeler. Had an older couple do a close slow drive by, and when he saw me reel up my rig he said out loud, "Was wondering what you were doing. Never saw anybody anchor down here." Gave me the distinct impression that we were breaking some local "rule". Shrugged my shoulders and kept fishing. ???

Re: Nehalem Bay
My girlfriend's kid just got back from Nehalem. Got some crab yesterday (long day for two limits), many of them soft still. He fished eggs up by the barn today with no luck.

Probably because it's a small area, and everybody trolls in front of Wheeler and the docks, would be my guess. Then they have to worry about hooking your anchor rope.

Re: Nehalem Bay
Angling etiquette? Never anchor in a trolling area unless you want to endure hard stares and nasty comments.

Re: Nehalem Bay
Nehalem is a dangerous bay to anchor in lots of boats, floats, and the sand moves a lot one wrong drop and your gonna have tons of fun pulling it...

Good luck

Re: Nehalem Bay
Lots of bait fish have an effect. I have no interest in eating after a big steak and potato, do you?
If you are going to Nehalem, troll (don't anchor), and throw some pots in while your at it.

Re: Nehalem Bay
Fished Nehalem Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The bait fish seem to have moved up to the 101 bridge and beyond. I did not see one fish caught. One fish was brought into Paradise Cove that was caught at the jaws on Saturday. There was a rumor a guide boat caught one fish at Wheeler Sunday AM. The crabs are still soft. All in all it's a wonderful place to fish though. Want a cup of coffee and a donut? Or need a break from all that heavy trolling? Just pull in to the dock either at Wheeler or Nehalem.
By the way I anchored up on the outgoing for a while at Khars nobody gave me any flak.

Re: Nehalem Bay
Fished it on Thrusday Trolled a spinner on the incoming up to the barn hole nothing on the way up. Stoped there and floated some eggs for about a hour nothing. Started back down river on the out going went about 50 yards from the barn hole and had a slack line bite (I hold the rod all the time when I troll spinners just like tillamook upper bay) Stuck a 28 lb hen . Started back down river had one more hook up but came unbuttoned. Not bad for 3 hours fishing. #7 Tomam Mexican Flag, Guide Green Beads, 2 ft dropper, 5 ft leader, 2 oz lead staying in contact with bottom.

Re: Nehalem Bay
Bllelk, I guarantee that if you anchor at Kahr's Dock or anywhere else in areas that are traditional trolling spots, you will receive significant flack at some point. Most guys who anchor in the Nehalem tidewater system anchor on the bank so they can bobber fish and everyone can still fish the same water. It's generally not good practice and will eventually lead to conflict.

Re: Nehalem Bay
Gee, I've only been occasionaly doing that for about three years. The only comments have been doing any good? What are you using? Mark any fish?
I recently read a report from a GUIDE that referred to anchoring up and freelining eggs on the Nehalem. Does that mean they're the only ones that can do that?
The current at Khars is pretty straight forward as opposed to up at Wheeler where most boats are sliding sideways and there is lots of conflicting traffic.
YNR thanks for your detailed report. Is that the Mexican Flag with the eagle and snake?

Re: Nehalem Bay
It is the Bob Toman # 7 Blade that is Red/Yellow/Green. I think the main thing is hold the rod and keep in contact with the bottom. That was the first time I fished there. I do better than average in Tillamook upper bay so I applied what I do there on the nehalam and got Lucky. A Priddy good guide showed me how to fish Tillamook a few years ago.

Re: Nehalem Bay
I've fished with a Priddy good guide too and have some of his blades. Big hummers, size 9. I agree with holding the rod and usually try to with 1 oz lead if I can stay down. Sometimes I have to change blade sizes due to the current and go down to a 5 or 6 blade to keep it rotating at a slower speed.

Re: Nehalem Bay
I haven't fished Nehalem yet this year. No good reports. When I first started fishing it 10 years ago I used spinners and did well. A prominent guide there informed me it was too early in the year to use spinners after he watched me boat my second fish. I just let it slide and said "tell it to the fish, OK!"

Re: Nehalem Bay
The nehalem has its times. Bobber fishing tidewater is the most productive way to catch lots of them. Sometimes it is great bobber fishing right in the town of Nehalem.

Re: Nehalem Bay
Fished the Nehalem for the first time, spent the money and went with a guide. Anyone who would anchor better have Ins paid up and ready for a problem.
I had a great time with David Johnson.
