Question for coin experts
Today, as a 5 year employment appreciation award, my employer presented me with a 1999 $25 Golden Eagle Coin - 1/2 ounce fine gold. Near mint to mint condition. Now, I know that 1/2 ounce of gold is a lot more than $25. How do I determine its value and where might I redeem it if I decide not to keep it?
Thanks,
CrF

Re: Question for coin experts
Do a google search for "$25 gold coins".
I found one site selling 1/2oz $25 pieces for $270. I purchased some 1oz American Eagle coins just to keep as an investment a few months ago. The price of bullion coins follows the price of gold, which is somewhere around $440 per ounce now, plus a small markup.
Dollars can become worthless someday. Gold will not.

Re: Question for coin experts
I would agree with keeping it. For birthdays every year would get me the uncirculated sealed set for the year and for Christmas, I would get one of the "special" ones, a real silver dollar or gold piece. Now I have them all saved in a special place...Although I suppose if it was from an employer, there wouldn't be any sentimental value...

Re: Question for coin experts
I'll probably hang on to it - at least for the time being. It was a neat gift and I guess symbolizes my contribution to the company for the last 5 years. However, it may get me a round trip ticket to Alaska. Thanks for the input!

Re: Question for coin experts
Great present! Congratulations...you work for a great company!!!
I have a collection of proof, uncirculated, and circulated coins that I've collected over the last 25 years. Anybody have any recommendations of shops that give fair buying prices for coins? Thinking about turning my coins into "dollars".

You`re a lucky guy Chromie! Where I work, you only get a 2 inch square of brass for 20 years! Hang onto it. It might go up in value like gasoline someday! Ff
