My lab got into the trash the other night & ate some Salmon skin, knowing she could get salmonella I forced her to throw it up by shooting hydrogen peroxide down her throat with a turkey baster. My vet had advised me to do this B4 when my other lab had consumed something potentially harmful. Well….. after regurgitating the contents of her stomach she continued to heave until blood was coming up. I immediately took her to the vet. After a long night at the vets office, and thinking I had just killed my bird dog, The vet advised me that in 99% of all dogs that is the recommended treatment for having them expel their stomach, however in 1% of the dogs the Hydrogen peroxide eats a hole in their stomach.
She is ok now and on acid reducers. Just thought I’d let you all know about the potential danger of this common remedy. I should have asked my vet if there is a better method but I neglected to. If anyone knows a better means let me know.
Other possible options...
Our pride and joy, a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, recently ate one of my wife's sanitary napkins...since it could swell and possibly plug up her stomach; we were advised to bring her in to the vet to get her to throw up. The vet put some drops in her eyes that made her empty her stomach soon after. I am not certain what the drops were but it did a very good job. The cost was about $95 since they had to keep and eye on her for about 2 hours afterwards.
FYI...salmonella is contracted from a parasite in eggs, pork and even beef if not thoroughly cooked. Dogs get Salmon Poisoning from eating salmon, steelhead and other fishes infected with a different parasite apparently only found along the pacific coast and pacific coast river drainages.
Good advice, though.

I have done this before when my Lab puppy swallowed a cheese wrapper. Good to know about the %1. If you do do this, make sure you give your dog about 5-10 minutes to throw up. We thought it didnt work and let her back in and then ...PURGE!. PS, your dog will not like you for a few hours after you have done this to it.
