Re: Got a beagle Now what?
Not much training involved with a beagle, I have hunted behind several and they are great rabbit dogs!!!! If you can find some rabbit sent put some on a dummy and drag it around where he can't see you then let him go. Most of the beagles I have seen run with their nose on the ground anyway so he should pick up the sent pretty quick. Rabbits make great tablefare and can be cooked lots of ways. BBQ'ed rabbit is great!!!! I hunted rabbits for years in the midwest where I grew up and its a blast. There are lots of sites on the internet about training rabbit dogs. If you ever need a rabbit hunting partner let me know!!!!!

Re: Got a beagle Now what?
Had one when I was in my teens. He was a great rabbit dog and did fair on phesants. You just have to teach him to range close and there is nothing better that a good Beagle to get phesants out of the bramble piles. Most importantly spend lots of time with the pup training or not. Have fun. Oh and don't leave the tv remote were he can get it. (experience)

Re: Got a beagle Now what?
HoosierDaddy is right. You don't train a beagle. It comes built in.
They say if you can call a beagle off a rabbit trail, then sell him, because he isn't a real beagle. That's the best description I've ever heard.
I hunt over beagles with some wheelchair friends of mine, and it's a huge amount of fun. First off, you can hear the dogs when they get the scent, and tell by their pitch just how close they are behind it. Rabbits tend to run in a circle, so by listening to where they're headed, you can set up and wait and watch. It's a great deal for guys who have trouble beating the bushes.
I know it's a long way to go, but the Mary's Peak Hound's Club in Corvallis is a pretty active and very friendly group who can probably keep you pointed in the right direction.
No matter what, they are cute pups and darn good hunters. Just...shall we say, focused.

Re: Got a beagle Now what?
well look at my avitar.. i have two of those little monsters and they can tell you who's got the ham sandwich out 3 boats away . and that nose is always to the ground.. we have a 2 year old and a 5 year old. the youngest gets on a scent, squirrel, cat, raccoon, etc, and you can hear her AROOOO, AROOOO, for miles, i think that howl is hilarious. the drawback is if she is off the leash you better be a track star if you want to catch her . better invest in a radio beacon tracker. i use a 20 ft cord tied to the leash and run as fast as i can when she gets going. shoot me an email if you want to go rabbit chasin sometime.
on a seperate note.
my cousin hunts cougars in montana and she has 4 walker hounds. only way you find them is when the cat gets tired of running, the dogs will be sitting at the bottom of the tree waiting for you.
you find the dogs by listening to the beeps.

Re: Got a beagle Now what?
Food, food and more food. Food reinforcment works but they definetely do not train like a lab. The biggest problem I have with mine is they don't always like to come back. It is pretty scary the first time you let them off a leash to hunt because you cross your fingers and hope they return. In 1 year of medium paced training I have "trained" my beagle to sit if I have a treat in my hand, come if I have a treat in my hand and there are no cats to chase and not be so mouthy when we play ball.
Watch the dog with your son if there are other dogs around. I am a 240 lb man and my beagle pulled me over one morning trying to get at another dog. They can be real aggressive towards other dogs and I have found a harness and muzzle help with that.
E.E. Wilson is the place to go for rabbit hunting and Skein is right the Albany hound club is active, I haven't had time to try and hook up with them but would like to.

Re: Got a beagle Now what?
The hounds club I mentioned is having a dog training day at E.E. Wilson Wildlife Area on August 15th. You need to get a "dog training permit" to participate, and these are very friendly, knowledgeable guys and gals who love working their beagles and sharing their experience.
The contact for the Hounds Club is:
Jerry Ray
Mary's Peak Hound Club
800 NW Meadow View
Corvallis, OR 97330
