Default Shotgun question

A couple of months back, my grandpa gave me his old shotgun. It is a Remmingon sportsman model and a 16 gauge. He told me it was his fathers, possibly older than that, and I was wondering if it is safe to shoot. I know that this is a question with MANY variables, but I figure its worth asking. It does not have a damascus barrel. However a guy told me to have it checked out because the regular lead loads you buy might still be to hard and could blow out the barrel, so if I wanted to shoot it I might have to pack my own shells with a softer lead? If anyone might have any answers, it would be appreciated.

There's no way you can get a reliable answer here. Too much missing information.

Take it to a good gunsmith and ask him if it's safe for modern lead and steel shotshells.

MikeT is correct have it checked out by a expert..even then it still might be iffy untill its fired...personally if my Grandfather gave me something that old, that is a grneration had down, i wouldnt even screw around. clean it up put it up somewhere to where your children can enjoy it. therefore you wont take a chance of damageing it. (just my 1 peso, worth)

I don't have to get on here to tell reeltrouble this, cause he's my best friend, but, in my opinion, take it to the gun smith, however, if they think it's ok to shoot it, shoot it. Guns are fun to look at, but more fun to shoot. I also know gramps didn't send too much sentiment along with the shot gun. TOC.

Take it to a smith. If a pro says it is ok to shoot( steel may or may not be ok, but start with lead. You could always buy bismuth if you wanted to duck hunt the thing),shoot it!

Almost any gun will handle an incredible abount of ammo.I am at 12K or so out of my clunky Mossberg pump. I would bet that she has at least 30-40k thru it before it aint worth fixin again.

Dogs and guns need to be worked to be happy!
