Default Duck dog for this season.

I need a dog for this duck season. I have a black lab mix but, he is not a hunter. Oh well the kids still love him. Another lab would be ideal. Anyone have thoughts.

Contact Captain Dan, he runs a lab shelter in the ST Helens area and is connected when it comes to labs.

Itchy,

I disagree. They are born ready to fetch. You need to explain the game to them. What better way to do that than to HUNT a HUNTING dog?

Teach pup to sit and stay. Take pup hunting. Pup will be sloppy. You were sloppy the first year you did anything too you know.

The finest dog I ever saw work was a chessie. Master was a retired duck junkie. He hunted pretty much everyday of the season. He bought the dog in July. In her second season she was by far the finest fetch dog I have ever seen work. Nothing like real world experience.

Buy pup. Love pup. Teach pup. Hunt pup. Be patient with pup.

Mark and the dog.

Flatfish,

I'll agree by the second season they should be a top notch hunting dog.I still don't believe 2 1/2 months is enough time to get a dog with no training ready for this season. On of my biggest pet peeves is a "sloppy" dog in the field. Nothing better than to have somebody elses dog spend more time in my blind than their owners. Having to listen to a guy yell at their dog all day ranks right up their also. :depressed:

I have to check with the boss and see what she says and then come to a arrangement but we should be able to work something out on her. She hits the water at mach 10 and is a retrieving fool. If you would like a demo give me a yell.

Whoops looks like I got the ********** what I ment to say was a nice female lab
