Default mountain bike

Anyone(s) out there have suggestions for rigging a mountain bike for hunting past the berms? Or a brand/make/model?

I used one for bow hunting a few times. Bow needs to be on handlebars and protected from banging against the metal. I used pipe insulation. Need water bottles and foodpack. It really works well when you want to cover a lot of area and its flat. Sled Springs unit was perfect fit. Snake River was too hard for me to get around well.

If you just want the bike for access down closed roads and not really single track. I would try and find one of those 2 wheeled child carts that you pull behind your bike. You know the ones with the bike wheels and canvas tops. You can find used ones with worn out covers for pretty cheep, and all you would be using it for is the frame. You can take the cover off and use the frame for carrying all your gear. You can even bike out the animal most likely in more than one trip. They will even go off road pretty well.

I put some atv gun handlebar racks on my mountain bike. Just keep the ride fairly smooth(shocks), or your scope could be off.

Bill, I have mine set up pretty good..it took a while but i use a rifle scabord, the same thing you would use if you carried your rifle on a horse. i mounted it across my handle bars , I had another fella do what i did but he mounted his stright up and down and attached it to the frame. its not in the way of his legs and his turning is great. i use to try to carry my gun on my sholder by the sling but no mater what i did it was awkward. the rifle scabord works the best, i think. you get a lot of viberation from a Mt bike nomater how good of shocks you have. the rifle fits good and snug in the scabord. the childs carring cart is what i use with a better wheel and berring so it can carry more weight. the back wheels on the cart is just small bycicle wheels so you can change them to a bigger size. and i believe someone now in Tualatin make a heavy duty bycicle cart. i should check in to it, i havent used mine for awile, i havent had to mt bike into backcountry latley, i used mine aprox 5 years ago when i was going for mule deer up in behind Pulina post area towards John day there was quite a few roads that were blocked off do to no moter vehicles, so i riged this up and took it in approx 5-6 miles it worked great i only ran into 4 guys on horses. But it is a great way to hunt, no doubt about it. just remember pal, get your legs in some what good shape. you might do ok the first day but you will feel it for the next week if you dont. as far as a Mt bike goes just get a middle of the line bike, you dont need the top of the line unless your in it big time, i got mine at Costco 6 years ago and put different tires on it its fine.

I've done this a few times with my bike and didn't care for it. By the time you put your pack on and your bow or rifle you get a little top heavy. Besides, I've kicked up a few animals on the ride in and couldn't do anything about it. I prefer to walk in now. BUT...if you want to try it, as said a rack is essential and try to stay as light as possible. Also, look for a bike with front suspension. It really smooths out the gravel.

Bill,

If you are looking for brandnames of bikes. You can not go wrong with Specialized or Cannondale. Mountain biking is huge around here and these are the two favorites. There are a lot of other quality bikes but for the money these are my choices. Go with aluminum frame for weight and if you can spend the money go full(front and rear suspension). They have the rear suspensions down good now and you will not give up much in the way of deploying energy to the ground. The smooth ride is worth it. Your back will like it much better.

A good brand mountain bike for the money is Raleigh. I've got an M600 hardtail and am very happy with its performance. The main thing to look for in a good bike is a good frame. I cracked the forks in half on an old bike a few years ago. It was a long walk back to the pickup.

I tried bow hunting on my mountin bike a few times, but it keeps running out of gas . The ATV bow mounts work pretty well, but your gun/bow is really exposed if you fall. The only time it makes sense to use one to me is to ride in fairly flat roads behind locked gates. Steep gravel hill are a bummer on a bike( both up and down).
