Default Predator calling

I am going wilderness lake fishing around Aug 10th. I have a bear and cougar tag. I bought a "gravity doe bleat" call. It is a little can that you tip upside down and it makes a perfect doe/fawn bleat.

Anyways, I am going to give my try to get some predators in. Do any of you have any tips on calling them in. I am going to pick up a few more predator calls like a rabbit call and a baby bear call.

What calls have you had success with?

Also, what kind of liscense or tage do you need to take coyotes and bobcats?

Have you checked the seasons? Are you going alone, or will you have someone to watch your back? A baby bear call? Sounds like you might be trying to call the big guys in and that's not something I would take lightly. Bears and cougars aren't afraid of much out there, and they're pretty good at what they do - which is killing and eating things.

No, no on the bobcats. You have to have a trapper's license to take them and there is a definite season. You need a tag as well. I think you can get everything you need up in Portland, or do it through the mail, but watch the seasons and limits.

Coyotes are a different story. Old Wiley is fun to call, and will respond pretty readily to any of those calls you have, although the rabbit call has always been my "go to" call.

Good luck - but be careful.

My dad will be with me and the bigger the animal the better.

What hours of the day are best? And what about the liscensing for a yote? Just a hunting liscense?

I saw the baby bear call in G.I. joes. It mimicks a lost bear cub call. I don't want momma to come running. I would rather shoot a boar but I know that it isn't easy to tell the difference but seems that mamma is what would come running. Unless a boar wants to kill off the cubs? Any ideas?

The most important thing is the set up. Check the wind get hidden and blow that call. I would use the distressed rabbit call.

My guess is that you will stir the protective urge in a mama bear with a cub call.

Most bear sightings I have heard about were in the afternoon and early evenings. Generally, after 3pm

2leys everyone here is correct in using a destress rabit call, first scout areas out that bears are in the area. find out if any bee keepers have there bees in the area. normally bears take advantage of them. but be cautious because when you use any call that resembles a destress critter or dying rodent, there could be a cougar in the area also. so always back up to a tree. good luck!

Wait till later in the season when the berries come out on the high slopes then use a rabbit distress call or fawn distress call bears arent to bad but you better watch those cougars they are everywhere.

One thing I forgot... it is one of the things you should never forget when hunting predators...

They are predators. If you are the one making the sound - you are now the prey.

They are coming to the sound for an easy meal most of the time. Cats will not run in. They will stalk to the sound/smell, so more than one set of eyes is best.

The only thing you need for coyotes is a hunting license.

Actually, you don't even need a license for coyotes, squirels or rabbits if you are on private land and have permission to be there, as the landowners agent. Can be lots of fun and gets you better skilled for hunting in general.

distressed rabbit for late summer, fall and winter, howler for spring, early summer sometimes is deadly.

Good luck

One thing about predator hunting, if you have a good set up, you never know what may show up looking for that screaming rabbit. So I would have all my ducks in a row get all of the licenses and tags needed. For Bobcat you do not need a trappers license (which requires that you take a written test), but you do need a pursuit license and a Eastern or Western fur harvest card, which you can only purchase at the down town ODFW Portland office or through the mail via the Portland office. Good luck if your set up is right you about to experience an adrenalin rush like you never have experienced before.
