If you mean the great weather, probably not yet. If the North Pacific High stays offshore for a few more weeks it probably will be Indian Summer for a while longer.

OK, I'll say it. It's not over.

I actually believe we'll have some more nice weather, we usually do in Sept.
Now, if only the nice days will fit the openings in our schedules.ron m

Hope it's not over but I feel very fortunate to have gotten out as much as I have. Seems to have been a nice year on the ocean so far.

I could care less about the weather, it's the waves I don't like.

Based on the current forecasts and the wave models it looks like the seas will be building with no relief in sight, at least not real soon anyway.

It can all change tomorrow, it's just getting down to the wire and I have zero fish canned this year.

I'll send you my Grunden's. You can leave 'em in the living room and that will make you think you've got lots of fish around.

On the way home from the coast Janis kept saying she smelled tuna. I told her she was just imagining it. Finally she leaned over, took and sniff, and said, "It's YOU!"

I was a little hurt.

We'll get out again, watch and see. Any day but Wed/Thurs.

I just looked at the Noaa Site and seen what was building and now I'm reading this. Do any of you guys have a Meteorologist degree or a crystal ball to say it's over? I had one great trip out there and still hoping for at least one more.

We caught a large mackerel yesterday at Westport. There were plenty of tuna as close as 40 miles over the weekend.

There is still a massive area of very warm water up here, all the way up to Vancouver Island. It would take a huge amount of cold energy to get rid of it any time soon. However, what could happen if it blows for any length of time, is the close-in stuff could cool off. So we would be looking at some longer rides offshore. In addition, the late season ace-in-the-hole.....the plume off of Cape Blanco....should be there.

How many of you have air miles, lets book a trip out of Ensanada or San Diego. Just talked with my cousin and they are still doing well down there. I am going to do some research. We usually get a six pac boat for 175 per person, the fishing would have to be really good though.

Mark we had good days in October last year...is that normal or a fluke?

Is is it simply year by year and there is no real pattern?

Why have we not seen big numbers of fish being taken while trolling jigs?

Default Re: Tell me it's not over!

1) It varies from year to year....as to how late we get good tuna fishing. It's pretty much always weather-dependent. As you say....last year we had fantastic fishing the first week of October. Several years ago however, the weather got snotty in early September, and that basically finished it for the year. Quite often, the very last fish of the season can be caught off Southern Oregon, off Cape Blanco.

2) Pretty much every year the pattern is, the fish switch over to feeding on baitfish (instead of squid) at some point in the late summer / fall. So fast trolling with clones / zukers does not produce as well. We still get them trolling, but it is much slower trolling, with swimbaits & plugs.

When someone gives the lecture on "beginning tuna fishing" it always seems to say "find 60* + clear water, troll at 8 - 10 knots with clones."

We are now in the "intermediate / advanced" lecture. Forget about that lesson #1. It doesn't have to be clear blue water, it doesn't have to be 60*, and you don't need to be trolling super-fast.

Just try putting out 3 rods with swimbaits, on 2 ounce jigheads, no more than 50 lb line / leader (30 - 40 is better), let them way back (but close together), and pretend you are salmon trolling (3 - 4 knots) alongside the birds & jumpers. If one of them goes off, stop the boat, let the 2 remaining lines sink, start casting another rod. What could possibly be easier ?

It's not over. We ran out of Charelston Monday 56-57 miles. .18 big fish and a nice ocean. We are working on doing it again very soon. 22.5 #s was the smallest and several fish over 30 #s and one was 35#s.

Albyfreak, I think the issue being raised here is the weather pattern for the next 2 - 3 weeks; not whether or not the fish are still out there.

You Southern OR guys have had bad luck this summer with the tuna water being so far offshore. I hope it continues to move in a little closer. Who knows we may come down and join you in a month.

Now who has the range to go the 500 miles to get into real tuna waters? Not many boats.

It looks like the water is retreating fast. George Taylor, the Oregon State meteorologist, says that this year is going to be a repeat of 1995. If I remember 1995 it was a rainy and nasty winter.

The bubble off Coos Bay has vanished. Misty Dawn was the only boat that I know that got into that bubble. The warm water that was off Stonewall has vanished too. Looks like salmon trolling is a viable option. Rich said he heard a commercial caught a 52# fish off Winchester Bay.

Well let's see Sensei old boy.....As of 6:45 am (good time to check - no daytime warming):

There is 61-62 deg water 42 miles, 277* from Depoe Bay; the 58/59* edge is 27 miles. That's no worse than it was in July!

So my friend, if I can catch a tuna within the next 10 days, within 45 miles, will you send me a batch of rice balls & sushi on dry ice ?

Let's see.... You say the cold water edge is at 27 and the true blue is 42??? That is 15 miles of running around hoping to see some jumpers... I seem to remember a certain MM saying that the best bite is on water that has a crisp edge like what existed off Coos Bay until the last couple of maps.

Now Misty Dawn said that he got 18 fish in the Coos Bay bubble and they were all nice fish. Hummm.... maybe I should take MM up on his bet. I just wonder how many fish is the threshold of a real tuna bite. MM said he got 46 on his last trip. Maybe I should be generous and say 30.

layer of sticky rice
wasabe mayonnaise
layer of smoked salmon
bacon
raw tuna in the middle
