Hells Canyon
Was in Hells Canyon area this weekend and saw some big bucks and big country also lots of grouse and a momma cougar and two cubs (real close). I was just curious if anyone could give me info on the area. My brother and I are bowhunting it this year and looking for any extra info. Please respond with any info no matter how small. Re: Hells Canyon
Not sure where you were on your scouting trip but I've hunted a lot of that country. We would jump off into the breaks of the snake towards idaho and see some real thumpers. Granted, you're going to work for them, but freezout saddle and all of the trailheads that are north of Hat Point going east are going to show you some nice animals. Where were you guys scouting? North, or South end of the Unit? I'm also bowhunting up there this year but we'll be starting by packing in 17 miles by horse before we even start hunting. I can't wait.

Re: Hells Canyon
We were at Hat Point and hiked in towards grassy nole moving along lightning creek alot of grouse in that area. Saw a 5x4 and big 3 up there and saw the rest of the animals from the landing strip down to freezout saddle. Saw 6 cow elk on top by hat point we were in the area less than 20 hrs and only hiked about 7miles worth of trails we were thinking of driving up to warnock corrals and hiking in from there for 3 days the rest of the time would be spent making day hikes wherever we can find spots to hunt its huge country up there Im used to big country but its enourmously steep and long up there. My other question is on elk and out chances of getting into them up there Ive heard good things about certain areas any help would be appreciatted. Also is very crowded up there during bow season or are people spread out. thanx

Re: Hells Canyon
Well as of people, not too many want to hunt that kind of country. I was there three years ago for the entire Labor day weekend and didn't see another hunter anywhere near Hat Point or Freezeout. It's rough country and you're going to work your hiney off for an animal but he should be a good one. It's hard to bowhunt if you don't understand how to hunt that stuff. Drop me an email and I can explain in a little more detail of places to go from these starting points that I don't really want to share on the board.

Re: Hells Canyon
There are usually enough people to move them off the top and into the draws. Saddle creek will usually hold a herd bull.

Re: Hells Canyon
I hunted & packed all the way thu the snake river unit... The animals of any size just arnt around PO saddle area to just below Lookout Mnt (south end of freeze out)Unless you take yur knive an fork ta 32 point creek. Ive seen herds of elk in over 100+ in size above lookout Mnt an bucks in the 30"+ spread,,,in the rough breaks. the county is huge an unforgiveing, If you take animals..insure ther condidtioned or you'll looseum or have many problems.....scout an scout an when ya think ya have it figured out scout somemore...Good luck.
