Default Refinishing Rem 600 Stock

I have a Remington 600 rifle stock that needs refinishing. It has some factory checkering and I need to know how to get the old finish out of the checkered area. I think I would us a varnish remover but I'm not sure. Thanks in advance for the advise.

I have refinished a couple of my Model 700 stocks and I used paint remover on both of them and a small brush to get the finish out of the checkering. Then refinished with Mineral spirits and linseed oil.

Firedog is right use a paint remover and an acid brush or soft tooth brush. I use a water rinsable remover so I can clean the stock with a damp rag. Then rub with ultra fine steel wool. For knicks and dings I use a damp cloth and an iron to pull it out. I finish with tung oil versus linseed because I have heard the linseed is not seal against water as well.

They also make a special finish remover that I have used that is just for gun stocks. Its a paste that you smear over the stock, and then let it sit overnight. The next day the varnish is soft, and can be wiped off. I used a big needle to get all of the sticky pieces out of the checkering. This method didn't seem to dry the stock out so much as the paint thinner did, and it didn't give me a bad headache. I think I got the stuff at Bi-mart, but it could have been Walmart a few years back.

I have used the paint remover and tooth brush, and with 00 steel wool, took the scraches out and the water and iron to get ding out, than finish it with Tru-oil,
I put it on two fingers and rubed it into the wood, let it set for over night, steel wool it again and when you have used the bottel of Tru-oil your gun stock well look better than new, and it well be waterproof.
Good Luck River-Rat
P/S: you can get it at walley world walmart.
