Default Black Bear Attack

This from today's Eugene R-G (Associated Press):

An 18-year-old from West Linn, Oregon, Nick Greeve, was camping with a group in remote eastern Utah while on an 80-mile float trip down the Green River when a bear grabbed him by the  head and neck and tried to pull him from his sleeping bag. He screamed awaking other campers who chased the bear away. Greeve was eventually evacuated, treated at the Price, UT, hospital for puncture wounds, and released.

The attack was on the border of the Unita & Ouray Indian Reservation. Utah DFW officials and tribal members tried to track down the bear but couldn't locate it...and now say they probably won't ever find it. "Bear attacks like this are extremely rare..." said a Utah DFW official.

There are a lot more bears in OR & WA than in Utah.

I am hiking into Marion Lake tomorrow for a 3 day stay. Every summer they post the bear warnings signs at the trail head. My wife having little to no experience in the woods when we first met was quite concerned with the signs. I convinced my wife on several of the early trips, it was just a yearly thing, not to worry about it, probably no bears in there anyway knowing I had seen several bears in there in previous years before we were together.

Then one summer, we are camped along the lake and a bear decides to have a few huckleberries from the bushes 40 yards from camp, and the bear in the trail on the hike out didnt help any either.

No matter how much I tried to explain to her, it was just a little one, and I could take him anyway the size of her eyes told another story.

I am glad it didnt tramatize here and she is going back this trip and we will have our 5 and 3 year old kids along.

I hope we get to see a bear, always a treat for me.

I saw a bear attack twice now . one was a brown bear that was shot in alaska and the other was in a camp ground in Michigans U.P. the black bear pulled this gal out of the tent by her crotch and then grabbed her by the throat and began to run with her we yelled and threw rocks but it did not stop and she was killed this tent was next to ours and it was very terrifing my mom has never camped since.

The brown bear attack was on a hunting trip. we found a dead moose and waited for the bear to come back to it. My uncle and I and the guide, the bear came back and was burying the moose and uncle Jim shot it in the front shoulder the bear ran . we waited 45 min. and the guide said it was a good shot so the bear should be down. We started the blood trail and we only found a drop here and a drop there but we kept on it for over a hour then all of the sudden the bear came out of some willows and nocked my uncle to the ground and pulled off his entire left but cheek and the guide and I UNLOADED INTO that basterd I shot it 4 times with a 375 and the guide had a 12 guage with sluggs we got to the boat and got him to the hospital but he almost didn't make it. now he no longer hunts and is permently crippeled. It amazeis me how fast they can cause damage. and how powerful they are. Cheers Rich

In my travels in Alaska, I have noticed a posted sign warning of bears. It is more to the point of what to do: "If attacked by a brown bear (Grizzly) play dead as this is usually a territorial attack and will, if you are lucky, soon pass. However if attacked by a black bear you should fight like hell because it is most likely a predatory attack and the bear is planning on inviting you to supper...his."

You can also wear little bells to alert the bears of your approach....this is somewhat controversial as you can sometimes tell what type of droppings are along the trail by the presence of little bells in them.

The safest method of travel in bear-county, better than heavy weapons, better than pepper spray, is simply to travel with a slower, out of shape partner; then you will never have to worry about out running a bear.

Hey BOE - You're probably on your way in by now, hope it was fun! How'd you do fishing? I've been into Marion several times. It's my understanding there are more bear sightings/contacts on the south side of the lake that the north (go figure...)I haven't seen a bear myself there, but do know of several who have. Carrying in a take-out pizza is apparently a bad idea (yes, somebody did...) I think the worst thing about Marion is the people who leave their trash! Take care! LTF
