hand cannon question
I am planning a couple of back country fishing excursions while I am up here in Alaska and I am considering getting a 10mm glock 29. I don't plan or want to shoot a bear with it, but does anyone think it would be enough?

Re: hand cannon question
I guided up there for quite a few years and from my experience that I have seen that will work just fine. Just remember to file the front site off of it. It wont hurt so bad when the bear puts it some place you wont like. Get a 454 or carry a shotgun or do both. I carried both to some of the places I had to fish.

Re: hand cannon question
Ditto what Rauly says.
My 44 mag loaded hot is only about as powerful as a 30-30, and I don't see many guys sneaking around grizzly or brown bear country with a Model 94. If you can't get at least a 44, I'd look for an inexpensive shotgun and load it with slugs. Get one from a hock shop and sell it when you leave - you'll get most or all of your money back and have cheap insurance while you're there.
I'm not trying to be theatrical or anything, but I wouldn't even think of shooting one of those guys with a 40 Smith.
(Darnit, I was logged in as my wife again. Gotta watch that.)

Re: hand cannon question
The nod has to go to the 454. You know what your doing. I remember your post about the kids from TX growling at the sow and her cubs When your walking through the bush pretend you don't have it with you. I've often found myself not being as careful when I knew I had one handy. By the way where are you going? the other side of the inlet?

Re: hand cannon question
bendman8,
Actually upper russian river in between the lakes when the reds are spawning. To chase bows, dollies, and possibly a early silver. That time of year the bears are very thick (even now they are) Saw 7 on saturday night in the lower river area. I ended up stuck on gravel island for 2 hours because there was 6 brown bears within 100 yards of me.
A 10mm has roughly the same ftlbs energy as a 357 mag. (more than a 40 smith) I may have a 44mag lined up. The reason I don't take a sawed off shotgun is that I am riding a mt. bike with a large pack. I am pretty familiar with bears, but the bears up there are not at all afraid of humans. I almost got into a brawl with a fisherman up there on saturday night because he was feeding a black bear (not smart).

Re: hand cannon question
A 10MM won't be nearly enough. A 454 would be better, but most guys won't want to shoot it enough to get good with it. I too would get a pump action 12ga.

Re: hand cannon question
When I lived up there I packed a 6" Colt Anaconda (44 mag), mainly 'cuz it was easier to hike with than a 12 ga. or a .375 H&H. Never had to use it, thankfully.
Shortly after I moved up there a guy was hunting black bears in early spring just off of Funny River Road near Soldotna. He stumbled upon a fresh moose kill in a clearing, and before he could backpedal out of there the brown bear guarding the dead moose jumped him. He got off one round from his 30-06 before the bear was on him, but the bear didn't even notice. The bear pinned him to the ground and was in the process of tearing him a new one when he managed to pull his 44 mag and put all 6 rounds into the bear's torso. It ran off, but not before the guy had a punctured skull, fractured ribs, a punctured lung, major blood loss, and too many lacerations to count. He was able to hike out to his pickup, but he almost died from blood loss before he got to the hospital.
The ADF&G put on a massive search for the wounded bear, but they never did find it.
One bullet from an '06, and 6 more from a 44 mag point-blank, and it was still able to run far enough to evade any pursuers. IMHO, handguns are inadequate to stop a big bear, but better than nothing.

Re: hand cannon question
Mount a handle bar gun rack on the bike. This is a easy solution. #9..00..slug..00..slug..oo..slug and save the 454 for yourself. Have fun up there and be safe.

Re: hand cannon question
Get yourself a good ol 454, 480 Ruger, 45/70 handgun.
Then do like I do and get gun racks for your bike and then get a good ol Mossberg 18-20 inch barrel with the extended tube and load it with nothing but 3 inch mag slugs and buck shot.
I say shoot there knee caps out with the shotgun, and then with the pistol, shoot them in the head.

Lured In...I am so thankfull I had a short barrel. Remember young Grasshopper to learn from someone elses experience.
WRO...DirtyE is offering you a good deal. I would tell him he pays the shipping and you will take it,but I'm not you.
WRO just remember body posture and actions actually works better than any gun to prevent confrontations with bears.

Re: hand cannon question
Lured In,
Rauly can hold off several bears with nothing more than tough talk , body posture , and some rocks  . Held them off for several hours guarding a pile of fish while I caught red after red after red ....... So many bears in the area we were fishing that they call it Jurassic Park ! Have fun !

Re: hand cannon question
I have heard filing the front sights before wrt to 357...too funny.
Load up a 44 with Garret Cartridges in a SRH, or a 454. Better penetration with lead cast but hard to get the hardness needed at full velocity potential in newer 44s using local foundaries of leadcast bullets. so If you take a 44 get these...

That bear spray is better than any handgun you could carry.

Re: hand cannon question
Dirty E,
Send me an email, I am interested.
2 leys,
While bear spray may be effective, with a gun I can fire a shot and 99% of the time the noise will be more than enough scare it off.
I have quite a bit of expirience being in bear country and more time spent with bears than the average joe. The only reason I am a bit nervous is that the bears I have been dealing with lately are habituated to humans. Including some that have been fed by people and some that are known fish theives. + I hate crowds so I generally fish late at night when the bears are most active.

Re: hand cannon question
what about some 300gr cast bullets loaded to the max in the 44mag?i would think that with 6 face shots that thing would be very much a hurtin' unit.that is if the stress wasn't too much that you couldn't hit it in the head.at close range a nice eyeball shot would blind the damn thing.
