Default Starkey Elk

Got my starkey second season elk tag and was wondering if anybody here had hunted that unit before. This will be my first year up in that neck of the woods. Where abouts might one wanna look for elk. This is also my first year hunting these beasts on the east side of the state. Usually I get my saddle mtn tag and do fairly well. Any info would helpful. Thanks in advance

I suppose like a lot of people I'm hesitant to tell you my favorite spots but I will give you a few tips. Go for roadless/road closed areas, Starkey has quite a few. If you are in an area with a lot of other hunters (not necessarily a bad thing), sit your but down! Let other hunters bring the elk to you. I like to walk so it's hard for me to do this but I probably see more elk sitting down than any other way. The elk may shift rapidly if significant snow falls (at least the cow/spike herds). You want to be in their lanes of traffic if so.

Now, if you truly got a 2nd season tag, then you have a general tag and can hunt the other units. Are you sure you didn't get a 1st season tag?

Go to the town of starky and head west past the store. go until you get to sheep creek ranch as soon as you go thruogh the ranch hang a right and head back to the back side of the ranch when they start shooting the elk will bail on to the national forest lands Good luck Rich

Drive passed Starkey store 8 miles to until you reach about your 3rd road closure sign.Turn left at the green Bld on your left.Go 1 3/4 miles up gravel road and park at the green gate.Walk out trail 1 mile and wait for the zoo to run elk to you.Its a popular area but has alot of elk.Another good spot is Fly creek where a road circles a closed off area for about 15 or 20 miles.Park anywhere on the bottom side and side hill it for as long as you want,it overlooks the fly creek valley.

Ironman1 is correct about the Fly creek area. I have hunted it for years. Lots of elk in starky. In the second season pray for snow it gets the elk moving down off Tower mountain and down into the Fly creek area.

Good luck,
