Default Swordfish hooked northern CA.

Swordfish is hooked off Half Moon
bay last saturday on a private boat 'Finseeker' fishing at 37.29 & 123.09 spotted a swordfish on the surface, trolled a pink and blue soft head 25' past swordy and resulted in a hook-up, after several 400' runs to the bottom the crew lost the fish at gaff.

Time to bring the big gear out!!! Pretty rare to have a swordfish crash a trolled lure during the day...........wonder if they would hit a trap??

And Lutyfish and a very near driveby. Full stories on the full speed fishing board.

Sounds like he was lamenting no flying gaff (or harpoon!) on board. Harpooning a swordie would be sweet. Make sure you got a big float attached!

So Kurt are you changing your tune? Is it possible that something like this can happen without you or your friends hearing about it?

Keep in mind that vessels in possession of swordfish CANNOT have a harpoon onboard. This is California regulation anyways...

Thanks for that info Matt. I was unaware as most, I suspect, to that regulation. It does make sense, that is best shot at bringing one to port that was sunning in daytime. Article in WON had good story on attempt. I posted on sailfish in Northern California paraphase of article.

No Jen, my pitch and tune is the same. I have been hearing about swordie sightings and hookups for the last four weeks from my buddies down there, who have billfish fever like you folks, but not nearly as bad, and don't talk about it endlessly while dragging 5 handlines. They are also are frequent coastside and full speed fishing contributors. I'm not saying I know everyone down there, but I know about twice as many blue water anglers in norcal as I know here, and up here I know better than half. Of course there are about 10x more bluewater anglers down there than here, so I probably only know about 10%. I did fish that areas salwater ports for 10 years or so. If a billfish was landed, I am confident I would hear about it.

But none landed. And definitely no sails. I didn't post here about sightings and spoolings because I don't want to make you guys crazier than you already are.

By the way, I heard about a great white shark hooked in bethany pond from my crew of 8 year olds over there. I know most of that crew too. I say grass carp, but they swear it was the landlord. The poison they fish in must be going to their heads. I figger they will prolly be alright by the next aluminum hatch.

Matt-
Didn't know about the harpoon reg. I would still poon one if I had it on the hook (or didn't) and had a shot, screw the stupid regs at that point. If you are crazy enough to get in the water with one of those bad boys it's legal to spear one, right? Now that would be an accomplishment. Not me, too yellow. Those things have been known to ram BOATS. I'd hate to see what they would do when they figured out that they were stuck by that stupid looking guy attached to the string.
