Default Serious Hunters would you be willing to....

Pay lets say $50.00 to put in for a 500 limit draw in the Steens Mt. and Trout creek Mts. for trophy 4 pts or better for Mule deer. and if you loose you then lose you $50.00 but some how make it tax deductable. and if you win a tag you then have to waite five years to put in again. Of course I am sure our great Oregon Game commission would have something lame to say about it. but feel free to post your thoughts....cammon boys speek up!

Would hate to see it. Remember that they have hunts such as Steens & Trout Creek so they can offer a trophy hunt for those willing to wait for it. Given the ODFW current method of allocating tags, the only way they could offer a raffle is to reduce the number of tags otherwise available. Well, I guess that is true unless they only offered so few through the raffle that it didn't significantly impact the resource.

hmmmm, let me think about that somemore.

Nope...I'm against it.

In Oregon the wildlife belong to the people...and Oregonians want hunting tags distributed "fairly". Our tradition is that Joe Sixpack should be able to hunt, too, and wealthy individuals shouldn't be able to buy a tag (I know, ODFW has tag auctions...which do sell tags to the highest bidder...and tag raffles with "cheap" tickets (but no limit on the number of tickets for one person)). But this amounts to relatively few tags and doesn't take away tags from the general tag lottery.

Even if the commission approved your idea (a long shot, probably), the legislature would need to authorize it...and there'd be a fight, for sure.

By the way, there hasn't been an Oregon Game Commission, lame or otherwise, since about 1975...its now the Oregon Fish & Wildlife Comm.

I guess i must be missunderstood here or something, but i wasnt asking to give tags to the rich i was saying open the unit up to trophy hunts "ONLY" 4 pts or better limit each area to 200-500 people you can do Oregon residents only if you prefer. when you put in for the draw anybody can put in that wants to pony up $50.00. dont forget the Steens and trout Creek and i believe one other area use to be 4 PT only excluslively. Untill The oregon game commission (or Oregon state fish and wild life) i still do think the do the same job. any way they saw a cash cow so they took off the 4pt limit and placed a 2 pt limit, to where you can slaughter off the forken horns bucks for a extra $5.00 or so for the draw to hunt here knowing more people would put in to hunt for smaller deer that to hunt for the big bucks. then inturn makeing more money for the the drawing process. please understand i want Oregonians to be able to particapate more than out of staters any time. i am very much against giving away one of our life time Ram hunts, to some wealthy Joe from another planet. I just think it would be kinda kool to be able to try to hunt in a trophy area only. i hope i made my self clear here. like i have said before i am nursing a broken pelvis im borde as heck so im trying to come up with something. (of coarse i can put my hand under my arm pit and make goofy noises, if my wife catches me ill be set out in the back yard in a stright jacket)

Well, if we took a big block of tags out of the regular tag draw system and made them a special draw at $50, some...maybe a lot...of people would be priced out...and would cry foul...and the legislature would punish ODFW some more.

I think one of the reasons ODFW did away with the 4pt rule in Steens & Trout Cr was they were finding too many dead 3pts that had been shot and left to rot after the shooters discovered their mistakes. Also, there may have been concerns about shooting off all the big bucks leaving the young ones to do the breeding?

Hope you heal up fast...broken pelvis  ...how'd it happen if you don't mind me asking?

The thing that the ODWF did a few years back that lowered every ones chances at tag and created a big cash cow for them, Was when you no longer paid your tag fees up front and only had to pay a $4.00 dollar apllication fee. Big horn shhep applications triple along with antelope. I have known of famliys that apply for all series of hunts for 3 kids mom and Dad. Then the get fortinate enough to draw all the tags. Then dad comlplain how much it costing or he cant even aford all the tags. I would like to see the state go back to paying upfront for the tags and application fee(tax). and then people will have to decide which hunt are more inportain to try for instead of applying for every tag out there.
But I guess that takes more applicants for the state which lowers their revenue.

RippinLips - I checked into it once and was told the $4 app. fee barely covers costs and generates little or no profit. It costs a lot of money to buy, program and run the big computers...ditto for all the *** terminals...and the hunting regs synopsis which would be a lot smaller & cheaper to produce & provide if not for all the controlled hunt material in it.

And the reason the pay-up-front requirement was eliminated was to avoid pricing out people who are less financially well off. Wildlife belongs to all Oregonians, not just the wealthy. If you think about it, it seems like ODFW probably did better under the old system because they got to hold everybody's tag fees for several months (a substantial amount of money), using the money as a sort of free loan without having to pay interest.

ODFW knows that some people successful in the tag draw don't buy or use the tags...that's why the system was changed a couple years ago and now extra tags are authorized over & above the number of hunters the biologists actually want...
