Treasure at RBH!
Had a little mishap this weekend. I was using a Scotty's rod holder with an extension on the transom. The extension broke at the base. Luckily, Brian (Sublime) was quick enough to grab the rod holder as it bounced off the swim deck.
What he was not quick enough to grab was the custom rod and Avet EX4/2 that was in the rod holder.
If you are feeling really lucky, we were 1/2nm NW of RBH. If you want to build some really big karma points, I would happily donate the rod as a reward for return of the reel. (No chance of recovery, I know...but stranger things have happened.)
I just count it as part of the price to play. Gotta feed the kitty once in awhile.
Yeah, and I should have had a safety line on the rod (but we were halibut fishing, barely moving, with the drag set very light).

Ouch, that hurts just thinking about it. You're good to be so philosophical about it even if there's not much choice. It would be great if you go the reel back, stranger things have happened.

There were a couple of posts on Ifish community in regards to hooked fish that were hooked to a rod. Take a look and you might get lucky. Good luck.

Re: Treasure at RBH!
Sorry about the loss; know how it feels. At the end of a day of fishing for Steelhead on the Deschutes the guide took off before I had my Life Jacket strapped on and my $600 fly rod and reel bounced out of my lap and into the river. What a sinking feeling it is .
What extension did you have Steve; metal or plastic. I can'
t imagine it was plastic but I swore I never would assume anything.

Re: Treasure at RBH!
It is metal....right up to the place where it turns graphite and goes into the mount. Snapped right at the mount. I thought there was a metal insert inside running the full length....and I will mention that to Scotty's when I discuss it with them.

Re: Treasure at RBH!
I had a similar experience below Bonneville dam fishing for oversize sturgon. My father in-law was here vacationing and I wanted to put him on a big fish. I set him up with my Penn International 30 2-speed on a custom tuna stick. I got him in the water and proceeded to rig another rod. He was gawking at the scenery. I looked over and saw the rod was just getting pounded. About that time there was a sharp crack and the Fish On rod holder snapped at the base. The rod, reel and rod holder shot out of the boat into the swift water. I figure with the rod, reel and spool full of Tuffline, about $1000 went overboard. The only good thing about this was that my wife didn't say a word when I replaced the gear (since it was her father).
I also have a Scotty rod holder on the extension. I've become pretty lax about securing the rod with an additional tie down. Rod's misfortune is a reminder and I'll start using the laynards again.

Re: Treasure at RBH!
Somebody could really wind up a winner.... literally...
Bummer Crabby, I cringed as I read your post. Almost brings a tear to my eay as I really love your work. It was very very very hard to let you pry your acid wrap rod out of my loving arms at the last TA meeting.
If it is all possible I sure hope you get to see it again... but I am not holding my breath.

Re: Treasure at RBH!
Fortunately, this was a Forecast blank with PacBay guides I bought last year from BOE and not one of the CalStar/Seekers with the spendy guides I have been working on this year. The Avet had at least two fish on it........
I will post the exact numbers after the weekend but I don't hold out much hope.

Re: Treasure at RBH!
OUCH! I lost a brand new rod (Calstar WC270) and reel when my Scotty rod holder busted. It shot straight back into the wake like a missile.
About 10-seconds later my other Scotty rod holder busted but my buddy caught the setup before it went overboard.
I dont use those holders anymore!! lol

I never even gave it a thought as to how much those Scotty holders
are good for. I have NO interest in feeding the Kitty, Ill be looking mine over tonight.

Re: Treasure at RBH!
Last year Bait O' Eggs and I blew up two "Fish On" rod holders. Twice we had rods skipping down the deck. Fortunately Pilar had warned me about safety cords and the only loss was the broken rod holders. The "Fish On"s were replaced with stainless steel holders that also had issues with the Zamac? bases they also have been replaced. Buy the best SS holders ONCE. None of the plastic/glass filled holders can take the trauma a halibut or tuna can dish out.
Crabbait if anyone is lucky enough to find your gear the reel will need major cleaning and the bearings might need to be replaced from all of the ultra fine sand and grit that will be packed into them. Don't ask me how I know this.

Re: Treasure at RBH!
I was looking at the rod when it went. It was not even loaded. There must have been a crack from a previous incident to make it break while drifting and no apparent strain on the rod.

Re: Treasure at RBH!
Not much hope of a diver finding the rig. The currents change and 300' leaves a long way to drift any direction the currents want it to. In addition it was a baited rig and likely will be bit and drug away.
